The technical highlights of the BMW M2 Coupé.

M double-clutch transmission with Drivelogic.

Gear shifts without torque interruption, without engaging the clutch, without taking your foot off the accelerator. Changing the drive mode is done with the 7-speed M double-clutch transmission with Drivelogic, either automatically or manually by the gear shift paddles on the steering wheel or by the gear lever. Drivelogic gives control via the Driver Experience Control as well as in automatic mode and manual operation with, in each case, a choice of three gear programs: extremely sporty, comfortable or fuel consumption optimised. Launch Control provides the perfect start with optimal acceleration from a standstill. Alternatively, the M 6-speed manual transmission is available as standard.

Active M Differential.

The Active M Differential in the new BMW M2 optimises traction and maximises directional stability. This electronically controlled multi-plate limited-slip differential takes traction and directional stability to a new level. The multi-plate limited-slip differential is proactively controlled with extremely high precision and speed. The locking effect can be varied between 0 and 100 per cent according to the driving situation.

M compound brakes.

The brake callipers in Blue metallic with the M logo mark the M specific high performance braking system. Through the use of a variety of materials, the M compound brakes attain, on top of excellent deceleration values, high stability and long service life as well as weight reduction that has a positive impact on agility, dynamics and acceleration.

Lightweight front axle.

The lightweight aluminium construction means that the control arms, wheel carriers, axle subframes and stiffening plate of the doublejoint spring-strut front axle weigh five kilograms less than would be the case with a conventional steel construction. Further weight savings are provided by the aluminium suspension struts and tubular anti-roll bar. In order to ensure extremely precise wheel location, play-free ball joints are used to transmit transverse forces.

Five-arm rear axle.

All the control arms and wheel carriers of the five-link rear axle are made from forged aluminium, which reduces the unsprung masses of the wheel-locating components by around three kilograms compared to a steel construction. In addition, a racing-derived rigid connection, dispensing with rubber bushings, is used to fix the lightweight steel grid-type rear axle subframe to the body. This further improves wheel location and tracking stability.

M Servotronic.

Drivers can enjoy optimum power steering support in every driving situation with M Servotronic. It adjusts the steering assistance to suit the current speed and delivers a direct and precise steering response even at high speeds. It also ensures supreme comfort by minimising the physical effort required for steering, as well as maximising agility when parking, manoeuvring or navigating narrow or twisting roads.

M Dynamic Mode.

M Dynamic Mode allows for improved driving dynamics by permitting a certain degree of wheel slip. Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) uses a variety of sensors to detect unstable driving conditions, such as understeering, oversteering or a loss in traction. When operating normally under these circumstances, DSC promptly stabilizes the car. When shifted into the M Dynamic Mode, such measures are initiated later in order to heighten the driving dynamics threshold for sporty drivers.

The M Driver's Package.

The M Driver's Package increases the top speed from the standard 250 km/h to 270 km/h. The M Driver's Package can be ordered directly for new vehicles, or can easily be added later. All other technical characteristics remain unchanged after the installation of the M Driver's Package. A voucher for driver safety training is included.

Racetrack-ready oil system.

Under heavy acceleration or braking and with fast cornering, the oil supply can cut out through extreme longitudinal and latitudinal acceleration (g-force). To prevent this, an additional cover on the oil sump reduces oil movement, while another oil sump pump ensures that oil returns to the turbochargers. So the best possible lubrication of all components of the M TwinPower is permanently guaranteed, in everyday use as well as on the racetrack.

The Alcantara covering, the blend of lacquered carbon. The race display based on OLED technology. Buttons integrated into the thumb rest area can be used to activate the Race, Sport, or EfficientDynamics mode. A stop watch (in Race Mode with 1/100 second indicator) and g-meter for forward and side acceleration deliver up-to-the-second data relevant to motorsports. It is also possible to save up to 50 lap times and best scores for speed and lateral and forward acceleration.

The trailblazer: BMW 2002 turbo.

The first series model in Germany with a turbocharger: the BMW 2002 (1973 to 1975) was an immediate hit with its compact look, athletic design and striking wheel case. Facets that are given a fresh contemporary twist and further reflected in the design of the BMW M2 Coupé. Its maximum speed of 211 km/h at that time made the BMW 2002 turbo one of the fastest cars on German roads.

The worthy successor: BMW 1 Series M Coupé.

The BMW 1 Series M Coupé (2011 to 2012) redefined the field of compact, high-performance sports cars. Powered by a 3.0-litre, 6-cylinder engine with M TwinPower turbo technology, the immediate predecessor of the BMW M2 Coupé generated a performance of 250 kW/340 hp at 5,900 rpm. Its maximum torque speed of 450 Nm gave the BMW 1 Series M Coupé a range of between 1,500 and 4,500 rpm. It accelerated from 0 to 100 km/h in 4.9 seconds, with a maximum speed of 250 km/h (electronically limited).
