The low-lying rear with diffuser and the two bevelled M double tailpipes complete the image of a highly-trained top athlete. The retractable hardtop opens automatically in just 20 seconds. Imposing air vents in the front cool the M drive train sufficiently even in borderline situations. M double-clutch transmission with Drivelogic.

Shifts gears without interruption in tractive force, without using the clutch and without slowing down: the 7-speed M double-clutch transmission with Drivelogic makes this possible. Gears can be changed automatically or manually using the gearshift paddles on the steering wheel or the gear lever. Launch Control guarantees maximum acceleration from a standstill.

Active M differential.

The hollow, lightweight output shafts on the rear-axle transmission and the Active M differential optimises traction and driving stability of the BMW M4 Convertible – especially when changing lanes or accelerating out of a bend, or when the road surface changes. Traction is optimised with the help of an electronically operated device that reduces the difference in revolution speed between the rear wheels.

M Carbon ceramic brake.

The low weight of the M Carbon ceramic brake contributes to greater agility and improved acceleration. Due to specific material properties, functional noises may be heard in certain situations or usage scenarios, particularly when exposed to wetness prior to stopping. The influence of wetness and road salt can cause brake effectiveness to correspond to that of a conventional brake system. This can be perceived as reduced braking power, which can be simply compensated for with greater pressure on the pedal.

Double-joint spring-strut front axle.

The response of the front axle is extremely direct. Compared to steel construction, the lightweight aluminium saves 5 kilograms in the double-joint spring strut front axle alone. The optimal transmission of power both longitudinally and transversely is ensured by, among other things, a backlash-free ball and socket joint. The precision strut made of carbon fibre reinforced plastic (CFRP) as well as additional screw connections of the axle support contribute to greater rigidity of the car’s front end.

Five-arm rear axle.

All the levers and wheel mounts of the five-arm rear axle are manufactured with an aluminium forging technology which reduces the unsprung masses of the wheel-bearing components by around three kilograms compared to the current model generation. A rigid screw connection of the rear-axle carrier to the body without elastic rubber elements is borrowed from motorsport and serves to further improve wheel steering and lane stability.

M Servotronic.

For immediate and precise steering, even at high speeds, the M Servotronic optimally adapts the steering force to the current speed. Reduced steering forces facilitate parking and maneuvering in a confined space. Fast riding around tight corners and quick steering maneuvers are optimally supported.

The heart of the BMW M4 Convertible: the M TwinPower Turbo inline 6-cylinder petrol engine. A collaboration of optimally coordinated motorsport technologies allows a thrust of 317 kW (431 hp). During extreme acceleration and deceleration manoeuvres, the BMW M4 Convertible maintains a stable oil supply to the engine thanks to an additional exhaust pump and a sophisticated return system in the exhaust gas turbocharger.

Crankcase in closed-deck construction.

In this construction, the area of the cylinders is largely closed. The pressure plate is perforated only by smaller channels for the coolant. The especially rigid crankcase allows for higher cylinder pressures, improves the performance yield and withstands higher loads. The coating of the circular lands with electric arc wire spraying (LDS coating) helps reduce the weight.

Racetrack-ready engine oil supply.

The M engineers’ motorsport experience is also evident in the oil supply. For example, the weight-optimised magnesium oil pan has an additional cover to limit the movement of the lubricant during intense transverse dynamics (G forces). With an additional oil suction pump and an oil return system in the area of the exhaust gas turbocharger, the oil circuit remains stable even during strong acceleration, braking or taking curves quickly.

Forged crankshaft.

A further technical highlight is the forged and highly torsion-resistant crankshaft. It is not only responsible for the transmission of a higher torque, but also, thanks to its low weight, contributes to a clear reduction of the rotating masses and thus to an optimisation of the response behaviour and the acceleration capability of the engine at the same time.

M TwinPower Turbo and high torque.

The 3.0 Liter M TwinPower Turbo inline 6-cylinder petrol engine features turbocharged high torque in a broad range of 1,850-5,500 rpm. The highest output is available at a wide plateau of 5,500-7,300 /min. The maximum speed even reaches 7,600 / min. If the driver shifts at this speed, the full power is instantly restored. The integral of power over speed is significantly higher. The result is a sensation of phenomenal acceleration.

Dethrottling and intelligent turbo deployment.

The intercooler visible on the engine leads straight from the compressor into the suction system. The gradients on the exhaust side are also linear and maximum throttled, allowing for efficient consumption at high performance. In addition, the suction full-load capacity of up to 270 Nm already suffices. Many very fast driving situations occur in this torque range.

The wind deflector of the BMW M4 Convertible.

The wind deflector makes driving more pleasant for the driver and front passenger by providing effective protection from draughts at neck and shoulder-height, even when travelling at high speeds. The mesh construction spans the width of the seating area and increases driving comfort without disrupting the convertible experience. When not in use, the wind deflector is simple to fold and store. Due to its compact size, it can be easily stored in the luggage compartment.

In 1990, the four cylinder petrol engine was upgraded to 158 kW/215 hp and the first BMW M3 Convertible reached a speed of 239 km/h. This made it the world’s fastest four-seater convertible at the time.
