BMW M5 Competition

The new BMW M5 is the uncompromising combination of elegant business sedan and systematically power-oriented supreme performance: large air inlets in the athletic front supply the M V8 high-performance engine with cooling air. The look created by the lines of the distinctive aluminium bonnet with two M specific swage lines is repeated in the contours of the roof, made of very lightweight and tough carbon-fibre reinforced plastic (CFRP). The discreet M rear spoiler supports the sporty and powerful appearance and is an important element of the overall aerodynamic concept. Form follows performance – consistently in every detail.

ENGINEERING FINESSE THAT EXCITES.

The technical highlights of the BMW M5 with M xDrive.

M Servotronic.

In every driving situation, M Servotronic delivers the right steering power, by adjusting to suit the current driving speed. In addition, it delivers a direct and precise steering feel at any speed. The system is specifically calibrated for the M line and offers three different settings that can be selected with the push of a button.

M5 suspension.

The radically overhauled M5 suspension fully harnesses the enormous driving dynamics potential. The car has a wider track width, adapted springs and tougher stabilisers as well as a specific calibration of the variable damper control. Thanks to the numerous configuration options for the M xDrive, for the engine characteristics, the variable damper control and the M Servotronic steering, the driver can find his perfect set-up – from comfortable to extremely sporty with the particularly agile and direct handling like the kind you need out on the racetrack.

M sports exhaust system.

The optional M sports exhaust system delivers a sound that perfectly complements the vehicle's overall athleticism. This can be modified using the integrated exhaust valve mechanism, which is controlled through the programmes chosen using the Driving dynamics buttons. The dynamic SPORT and SPORT+ driving modes are accentuated by a thrilling, even more distinctive sound, while the comfort-oriented mode is accompanied by more discreet engine acoustics that better suit longer journeys and the serene driving experience.

M xDrive.

BMW M xDrive with Active M differential guarantees maximum traction and driving dynamics for everyday driving and at the racetrack. The M specific technology combines the typical agility of a rear-wheel drive with the control of an all-wheel drive.

8-speed M Steptronic Sport transmission with Drivelogic.

The 8-speed M Steptronic transmission with Drivelogic features extremely short shifting times and numerous shifting options: from very athletic and dynamic to comfortable and fuel-efficient. The gears can also be shifted manually with the gear lever, or via gearshift paddles on the steering wheel.

Double wishbone front axle.

An athletic and comfortable driving experience, all at once – the Double wishbone front axle guarantees maximum driving dynamics and agility, combined with great comfort on every road surface. The special Double wishbone front axle construction frees the dampers from disruptive transverse forces. They respond much more sensitively to road bumps. It offers exceptional roll stabilisation when driving through bends, allowing high lateral acceleration without the tighter suspension settings that would normally be necessary for that. This allows the axle to deflect smoothly, and it is also characterized by excellent directional stability.

M Carbon ceramic brake.

The M Carbon ceramic brake delivers braking power more directly. It is non-corrosive, very resistant to abrasion, tolerates more heat and contributes to a lower vehicle weight, which has a positive impact on agility, dynamics and acceleration. Matt Gold-coloured brake calipers with the M logo make this special technical equipment visible from outside the car. Depending on conditions and usage, features specific to the materials used can lead to operational noises just before the vehicle comes to a halt, particularly in wet conditions. The impact of moisture and road salt can cause the braking action to be equivalent to a conventional brake system. This can for a short time be experienced as a reduction in braking action and can be balanced out by greater pressure on the pedal where necessary.

The BMW M5 generations.

A new concept.

This series model was designed to offer the experience of racetrack technology for everyday use. With a maximum speed of 245 km/h, the first BMW M5 was the fastest sedan of its time and was unique in all respects. BMW Motorsport GmbH had created an entirely new class of vehicle: the high-performance sedan. In just three years, 2,200 hand-finished BMW M5’s were sold.

More powerful, more individual.

Subtle modifications to the suspension design and unique light-alloy wheels gave the second generation BMW M5 an individual yet understated look. The capacity was increased to 3.6 litres and in 1992 to 3.8 litres. This enabled the in-line 6-cylinder petrol engine to increase its output to 232 kW/315 hp or 250 kW/341 hp. Optional Nürburgring performance suspension also became available. More than 12,000 vehicles were sold.

The first 8-cylinder engine.

The third generation BMW M5 was more athletic than ever. It was characterised by powerful front and rear aprons, distinctive side skirts, aerodynamically shaped M wing mirrors, 18-inch M light-alloy wheels and four tailpipes. With its 5 litre, 8-cylinder engine and an output of 294 kW/400 hp, the third generation BMW M5 took only 5.3 seconds to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h. It too was a commercial success setting new records: over 20,000 vehicles were sold worldwide.

A passion for maximum performance.

The fifth generation BMW M5 evoked a passion for maximum performance. It had the typical attributes of a BMW M car: a sense of harmony, the latest technology and outstanding dynamic driving characteristics. Under the engine bonnet, a high-rev V8 engine with M TwinPower Turbo technology enabled a peak performance of 412 kW/560 hp. The spontaneous power delivery and a maintained level of thrust – so characteristic of M – enabled acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h in 4.3 seconds.
