DRIVES PAST. STAYS WITH YOU.

The rear is intersected by horizontal lines, which emphasise the wide stance of the body. The character crease-lines and imposing side skirts draw a distinctive wedge shape into the silhouette. The M gill with Air Breather ensures reduced air turbulence in the front wheel arch, while the wide front apron and the large air inlets also draw attention to the powerful engine – even when the car is at a standstill. The M double kidney and striking headlights are framed in chrome. The interior of the BMW X5 M combines the racing driving feeling of the BMW M automobile with a generous feel for space and the elevated seating of the BMW X model.

The technical highlights of the BMW X5 M.

M Servotronic.

The M Servotronic, a unique design of the BMW M GmbH, optimally adapts steering wheel resistance according to speed, ensuring direct and precise steering even at high speeds. At the same time, it offers maximum comfort as a result of the reduced amount of force needed to turn the wheel, along with maximum manoeuvrability when parking or navigating curvy roads.

8-speed M Steptronic transmission with Drivelogic.

The 8-speed M Steptronic transmission with Drivelogic sets new benchmarks in dynamics and shifting. The driver can shift very dynamically at top speeds and use the Drivelogic button to select one of three shifting modes: from comfortable and efficient, to dynamic, to racetrack dynamics with extra-short shifting times. Manuel shifting is possible via the M gear selector or the M gearshift paddles on the steering wheel. The integrated Launch Control enables maximum acceleration from a standstill. This is also the first torque converter to enable “creep on demand” through the Low Speed Assistant.

M Chassis settings.

Firmer suspension spring tuning and a 10-millimetre drop in ride height team up with the Dynamic Drive active roll stabilisation system to bring about an effective reduction in body roll and movement. In addition, the BMW X5 M comes as standard with air suspension with self-levelling at the rear axle. Dynamic Damper Control with electronically adjustable dampers – the driver can select from three modes (COMFORT, SPORT and SPORT+) at the touch of a button – ensures the perfect balance between dynamic flair and ride comfort.

BMW xDrive intelligent all-wheel drive plays a key role in the outstanding dynamics of the BMW X5 M. The system employs an electronically controlled multiplate clutch to allow fully variable distribution of drive between the front and rear axles – from 100 per cent at the rear to up to 100 per cent at the front. This ensures the best possible traction in all road conditions. In the interests of greater agility, xDrive brings a rear-biased basic set-up to the BMW X5 M.

M Drive.

M Drive allows for the individual configuration of personal driver profiles from comfortable gliding all the way up to a sporty-direct set-up for use on the racetrack. Activating either of the two saved profiles (and all of the settings saved with them) is as simple as touching one of the two M Drive buttons integrated into the M leather steering wheel.

M Compound brakes.

M compound brakes have benefited from motorsport technology, allowing them to maintain constant effectiveness and brake-fade stabilisation, even under demanding usage. The use of various highly resilient materials results in excellent thermal stability, long-term durability and precise braking. It also reduces the brakes' weight, which has a positive effect on agility, dynamics and acceleration.

Boasting innovative M TwinPower Turbo technology with a pair of TwinScroll turbochargers, cross-bank exhaust manifolds, VALVETRONIC and High Precision Direct Petrol Injection, the 4.4-litre V8 produces maximum output of 423 kW/575 hp between 6,000 and 6,500 rpm. A race-tested cooling system with four circuits and ten radiators withstands the highest thermal loads. An engine like no other.

Racetrack-ready engine oil supply.

The aim in the development of BMW M cars is to master the world’s most challenging race track at race speed without a hitch. The extreme lateral and longitudinal acceleration generated when lapping the Ring places huge demands on the engine’s oil supply. But sophisticated oil sump and suction snorkel geometry allows the new BMW X5 M to hit up to 1.2 g without creating a problem.

Racetrack-ready cooling concept.

The science behind the optimal cooling of the drive components for maximum performance: a total of four cooling circuits with 10 radiators, five coolant pumps and additional transmission cooling oil guarantee the perfect operating temperature of each component, even at a permanently high performance demand. For the best possible performance and efficiency, the cylinder’s filling ratio was increased by enlarged intercoolers.

Cross-bank cylinder exhaust manifold.

For an optimal transfer of the exhaust gas streams to the turbine wheel, the exhaust gases of two cylinders are combined with an ignition interval of 360°. For example, four twin exhaust gas turbines each drive a TwinScroll turbocharger. The separation of the gas streams continues until the impingement of the turbine wheel. Plus, optimum gas throughput is reached in the manifold and thus the best possible charge cycle in the cylinder.
