The Design of BMW Individual.Ultimate exclusiveness, captured by Thomas Schorn.

How do you make something extraordinary seem even more unique? You reinforce the visual impression. That is exactly what Cologne-based photographer Thomas Schorn did. Specialised in automotives, the professed automobile enthusiast artfully staged the power and special character of three BMW M models with his Mono-concept. We talked to him during his work and the Mono-shooting.

BMW M Magazine: You have been a photographer for 8 years now and command an impressive portfolio in the domain of automotives. Did you know from the beginning that you wanted to specialise in cars?

Thomas Schorn: Yes and no. The passion for cars was always present. However, I knew from the beginning, that this would be a long and winding road. Owing to the high level of responsibility and the complexity of car manufacturing it was inconceivable for a greenhorn to be unleashed on an allocation at that time. Nowadays the threshold for young photographers has thankfully been lowered due to smaller Social Media allocations. As I didn’t fancy working as an assistant, I positioned myself as a Stilllifer* directly after my apprenticeship. This worked out pretty neatly. However, I never lost sight of my goal. In 2015 I finally made the cut and completely specialised in cars.
*(editor’s note: a photographer who predominantly captures still life, as opposed to, say, portrait photographers)

// The colour blue does not only signify harmony, but also exclusivity and style. An alliance which seems ready-made for the BMW M5 Competition. Thanks to his masterful play with different blue tones, Thomas Schorn emphasises the dynamics and pure power of the BMW M5 Competition. The background perfectly harmonises with the BMW Individual special paint Santorini Blue II non-metallic, without distracting from its exclusivity. //

What is the allure of capturing

automobiles and motor sports on camera?

Sometimes I find it difficult to answer such questions satisfactory, because the passion overweighs rational reasons. If you burn so brightly for something, it becomes an inner motor without need for reasons, let alone being able to explicitly name them.
Basically, these are often two very different animals. Automobile photography is highly complex, which inherently accommodates me as a nerdy Stillifer, who is intent on the details. Motor sports on the other hand, is the complete opposite and almost has something of a regimen for me. Wild, unpredictable, dirty, real. Pure passion and gut instincts are in the driver’s seat, the head is on hiatus for the most part.

// The BMW M4 Coupé in the BMW Individual special paint Fire Orange non-metallic is a proper pulse accelerator. Thanks to the Mono-staging, the powerful proportions and details come to full fruition. Broken up by graphic elements in black and white, the dynamic of the high performance Coupé is emphasised from every angle. //

Can you tell us about the particular challenges of portraying cars?

The challenges completely depend on the concept and can therefore not really be generalised. Cars have not only become highly complex in terms of technical details but also design, which does not necessarily make it any easier for us photographers. A body is virtually a 360° mirror face, which needs to be entirely adjusted. Shootings in a studio are relatively rewarding, because everything can be illuminated without interferences and under optimal conditions. Outdoor shootings are a different beast. Here various factors such as what is mirrored or how the car harmonises with the location need to be considered.

You stage the BMW Individual cars exceptionally with your Mono-concept.

Where did you get the inspiration from?

As a visual person, one sees many things, forgets little, and one merges. I did not have „the one“ inspiration, it’s more of a combination of different things, that I absorbed in the past. The concept was already there, it was just not entirely tangible. With BMW M Individual everything clicked into place. The concept is a perfect match for the virtually unlimited variety, that one has as a customer here.

What was special about the BMW M Mono project?

The singularity of this shooting was matching the lighting and mirrorings in the varnish with the synthetic backgrounds. The scribbles of the backgrounds functioned as blueprint during the shooting. As we had various background scenarios for each car beforehand, we needed to set the lights to different variants for every car, in order to flexibly react to changes in the background afterwards.

If you could choose a BMW M, which one would it be and why?

Can I choose two? The M2 Competition as a small and feisty track tool, and the M4 Coupé in signal green as the daily driver. And as I’m already breaking the rules anyway, I will also take the original BMW Z1 for the summery style.

Thomas, thank you so much for the interview!

BMW M5 Competition:
Fuel consumption in l/100 km (combined): 10.8 - 10.7

CO2 emissions in g/km (combined): 246 -243

The illustrations show optional equipment.

The values of fuel consumptions, CO2 emissions and energy consumptions shown were determined according to the European Regulation (EC) 715/2007 in the version applicable at the time of type approval. The figures refer to a vehicle with basic configuration in Germany and the range shown considers optional equipment and the different size of wheels and tires available on the selected model.

The values are already based on the new WLTP regulation and are translated back into NEDC-equivalent values in order
to ensure the comparison between the vehicles. [With respect to these vehicles, for vehicle related taxes or other duties based (at least inter alia) on CO2-emissions the CO2 values may differ to the values stated here.]

The CO2 efficiency specifications are determined according to Directive 1999/94/EC and the European Regulation in its current version applicable. The values shown are based on the fuel consumption, CO2 values and energy consumptions according to the NEDC cycle for the classification.

For further information about the official fuel consumption and the specific CO2 emission of new passenger cars can be taken out of the „handbook of fuel consumption, the CO2 emission and power consumption of new passenger cars“, which is available at all selling points and at https://www.dat.de/angebote/verlagsprodukte/leitfaden-kraftstoffverbrauch.html.
