It’s the year 2015, and the BMW M2 Coupé is setting new standards in the compact class. With 370 hp and an extremely muscular design, this vehicle doesn’t just bring the typical M character to the road, but its performance is also unique. Fast-forward to 2018, and it’s clear that BMW M is now developing this top-class athlete into something even greater. The BMW M2 Competition represents the ultimate evolution of this iconic M automobile. But how do they differ from one another? Here, we compare the two vehicles.

A POWER INCREASE OF 40 HP.

Naturally, the BMW M2 Competition evolution can be experienced under the hood. Equipped with two turbochargers, the 3.0-litre TwinPower Turbo in-line 6-cylinder petrol engine now boasts an aggressive 410 hp – an increase in output of 40 hp. With torque increased to
550 Nm (previously 465 Nm), this powerhouse accelerates from 0 to 100 km / h in only 4.2 seconds (with M DCT). The cooling system, which has also been developed further, ensures the high-performance engine always works within the optimum temperature range.

SUPERIOR PERFORMANCE.

While the track performance of the BMW M2 Coupé was already impressive, the BMW M2 Competition continues to improve in every respect. The new CFRP strut in the engine compartment of the vehicle provides for increased rigidity of the body and more steering precision than its predecessor. Meanwhile, even higher cornering speeds are achieved with the standard Active M Differential in the BMW M2 Competition.

POWERFUL BREAKING SYSTEM.

This increase in forward momentum can also be curbed thanks to the M sports brake with compound brake discs. The six-piston fixed calipers on the front axle can also outpace the fastest M2 ever with ease – even on the racetrack.

CONFIDENT APPEARANCE.

Although the BMW M2 Competition remains faithful to the classic dimensions of the M2, there are numerous design details that have been further developed both visually and technically. For example, the front view of the vehicle is dominated by enlarged air intakes and the double bridge kidney in gloss black with the M2 badge. The front apron has been aerodynamically improved compared to the BMW M2 Coupé, and further emphasises the width of the vehicle. The striking M exterior mirrors also show that the new model is part of the M family.

BY SHOWING STRENGTH.

The strongest back in the pack: the BMW M2 Competition’s rear now features a distinctive M diffuser and beveled tailpipes in black chrome. From now on, it will be driven on 19” M light-alloy wheels in a new Y-spoke design.

THE INTERIOR – TAILOR-MADE FOR TOP PERFORMANCE.

The right environment is essential for drivers to get the most out of their vehicle, and the interior of the BMW M2 Competition places the driver even more in the centre of the action than before. Thanks to the new M1 and M2 buttons on the M leather steering wheel, the car’s driving style can be adjusted in seconds, as perfectly-timed gear changes are enabled with the shift paddles in conjunction with the M dual-clutch gearbox.

The infotainment system in the BMW M2 Competition can now be operated even more intuitively, thanks to the interface’s modern design which offers the latest connectivity options. Those who demand maximum lateral support can also upgrade the interior with optional M Sport Seats that feature an illuminated M2 logo. Here, too, the BMW M2 Competition is distinguished by its perfect appearance and even better performance.
