Thoroughly tested. This is what the press have to say about the new BMW M3 and M4.

The new BMW M3 and BMW M4 are part of the core brand of BMW M. In the offices of the motoring press too, the newcomers have been among the most popular vehicles over the last few months – not to mention worldwide. The attention sparked when the new models were handed over to car journalists and YouTubers was astonishing. And they formed their opinions – here’s a selection.

Bimmertoday – “A real character”.

“How exactly BMW M have managed to take such a huge step in terms of front axle performance is the engineers’ secret: Although as we know the BMW M3 G80 is a good deal heavier than its predecessor, the 6th generation is tangibly more willing and agile. Regardless of how tight the bend seems to be, the front axle stoically follows every steering command and even if the driver really messes things up the car will only be forced into a gentle understeer. Even in fast bends with a large radius, the M3 Limousine is extremely stable and conveys a great feeling of trust.”

Motortrend – “This car is that good.”

“Wow. I wasn't prepared for how brutal, how relentless, how indomitable the G80 BMW M3 Competition feels on the road. The initial impression is all torque—buckets and suitcases full of it. The S58 engine produces peak torque over a glass-flat "curve" from 2,600 to 6,000 rpm, and the car's forward thrust simply never relents. Third, fourth, or fifth gear, it doesn't even matter because you're still in the meat of the "curve." Bimmer fanboys and girls wrinkled their collective noses over the fact that the last-gen car's dual-clutch gearbox was dumped in favor of a plain-ol' automatic. These same types are also upset that anything other than a manual exists. The reality? If I told you the transmission was actually a dual-clutch, you probably wouldn't know the difference. That's how quick ZF's 'box has gotten.”

AutoBild – “BMW M3 and M4 are more fun than ever!“

“For drift fetishists, the stability control can be completely switched off, or fine-tuned in ten steps via the iDrive menu. That way, every driver type can define the exact extent to which the driver assistance intervenes. On the handling track that means a powerful, but at the same time easily controllable driving performance that spirits a grin on the face of every driver, regardless of how talented.”

Top Gear – „The M3 ist the most complete sports saloon on sale today.”

“No other sports or super-saloon is as capable, grippy, tied down, responsive or communicative on a difficult road. Yes it’s heavier than before. No, it’s not an issue. At all. In its ability to deliver speed and composure it’s a huge step on from before and has perhaps the best chassis of any contemporary M3 since the E46 twenty years ago.”

  • The models illustrated include optional equipment.

Official data on power consumption and electric range were determined in accordance with the mandatory measurement procedure and comply with Regulation (EU) 715/2007 valid at the time of type approval. In case of a range, figures in the NEDC take into account differences in the selected wheel and tire size; figures in the WLTP take into account any optional equipment. WLTP values are used for assessing taxes and other vehicle-related charges that are (also) based on CO2 emissions, as well as for the purposes of vehicle-specific subsidies, if applicable. Where applicable, the NEDC values listed were calculated based on the new WLTP measurement procedure and then converted back to the NEDC measurement procedure for comparability reasons. For newly type-tested vehicles since 01.01.2021, the official data no longer exist according to NEDC, but only according to WLTP. For more information on the WLTP and NEDC measurement procedures, see https://www.bmw.com/wltp.

For further information about the official fuel consumption and the specific CO2 emission of new passenger cars can be taken out of the „handbook of fuel consumption, the CO2 emission and power consumption of new passenger cars“, which is available at all selling points and at https://www.dat.de/co2/.
