High-Performance for Hollywood. The car’s the star – the most exciting film scenes featuring BMW M.

To be successful, actors must perform convincingly, show character and convey emotion. The same qualities are needed in elite high-performance vehicles – no car captures the eye without an element of fascination, precision and expressiveness. But if they have all three, a leading role definitely awaits. And if the directors of some Hollywood’s best blockbusters have their way, at least one BMW M will definitely be at the top of the cast list.

MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE – FALLOUT (2018).

In addition to Tom Cruise (as Ethan Hunt) and Simon Pegg (as Benji Dunn), a BMW M also joins the cast of stars in the sixth installment of the Mission: Impossible franchise. The BMW M5, with its innovative M xDrive all-wheel drive system, guides Cruise through the incredible action with precision and agility, displaying pure M driving pleasure even when the Hollywood star is not at the wheel himself. At one point, the 600 hp M5 – driven via remote control on Dunn’s smartphone – comes to our heroes‘ rescue by placing itself in the firing line.
As always, the film wows with high-end special effects, crazy stunts and fast-paced car chases. The BMW Group has been a partner of the Mission Impossible series since 2011 and, following on from Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol and Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation, it supplied Mission: Impossible – Fallout with cars and motorcycles that showcase a vision of the future and the technologies of tomorrow.

BMW M3 in Overdrive

OVERDRIVE (2017).

Overdrive sees daredevil brothers Andrew (Scott Eastwood) and Garrett Foster (Freddie Thorp) travel to southern France in search of a lucrative payday. In particular, the two car thieves have their eye on some exclusive and well secured collector's items that belong to some less than desirable owners. During one of their raids, they come into conflict with gangster Jacomo Morier, whose priceless car collection has been targeted by the siblings. Needless to say, wild pursuits and adrenaline-charged stunts ensue.
Alongside Hollywood star Eastwood, a 431 hp BMW M3 takes on a leading role right from the action-packed opening scene, where its precise handling is really put to the test. In addition to the M3, vehicles including the BMW 6 Series Gran Coupé, the BMW 4 Series Convertible, the iconic BMW i8 and the rare classic BMW 327 are part of the fun.
Eastwood was thrilled to be working with BMW and BMW M, even when he wasn’t behind the wheel. He commented: "To film with BMW cars is always fantastic. The BMW 327 is such a wonderful classic car. It's impossible not to be impressed by it. Being on the bonnet of the BMW M3 was a unique experience. I could clearly feel the dynamics and energy of the car."

MISSION 8 – FROM THE FIRST IDEA TO THE FIRST RACE (2018).

Of course, Hollywood isn’t the only part of the film industry to covet BMW M’s cars. Placing the BMW M8 GTE centre stage, our colleagues from BMW Motorsport produced an absolutely fascinating documentary: Mission 8. The M8 GTE was the first race car BMW M Motorsport used before its production counterpart was launched when, in January 2018, it made its debut at the 24 Hours of Daytona. However, this was only preparation for its ultimate showdown a few months later at the 24 Hours of Le Mans.
Mission 8 provides a deep insight into the development of the car. What makes the film so special is its honest viewpoint – even the team’s setbacks are shown here. The documentary crew follows the entire process and takes a compelling look at the technical processes, the test drives and all the highs and lows experienced by man and machine. This is a must-watch for both casual and committed fans of motorsport.

MISSION IMPOSSIBLE: ROGUE NATION (2015).

In the fifth instalment of the Mission Impossible film series, the Impossible Mission Force – the highly effective but collateral damage-rich employer of Ethan Hunt (Tom Cruise) – is dissolved. At the same time, a shadowy underground organisation called the Syndicate is formed with the aim of establishing a new world order. Special agent Hunt tries to put things right and joins forces with British agent Ilsa Faust (Rebecca Ferguson) in an attempt to bring down this dangerous new foe.
Another protagonist in Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation is the 2015 BMW M3 in Silverstone Metallic, seen racing through the streets of Rabat, Morocco, during a high-octane car chase. Numerous M3’s were used to film the scene, and director Christopher McQuarrie was impressed by their durability. "To BMW M’s credit, no matter how many times we did the stunt, we couldn't get their cars to stop running. And we really did it a lot," he noted after the shoot.

FAST & FURIOUS 6 (2013).

Fast & Furious 6 begins exactly where the fifth part of the franchise ended. To recap: the successful Rio heist resulted in a wealth of riches for Dominic Toretto (Vin Diesel), Brian O’Conner (Paul Walker) and the rest of their crew, but now the friends are living in exile – spread all over the world and unable to return home. Special Agent Luke Hobbs (Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson) offers to clear the petrolheads' entire criminal record and allow them to return home. However, this comes at a price: they have to help Hobbs hunt down an armed and dangerous mercenary organisation.
To pull this off, the crew leaves nothing to chance and chooses five BMW M5 (2005) for battle on the streets of London. With 507 hp generated by the 5.0-litre V10 engine, the high-performance saloon is an excellent choice to take Toretto, O'Connor and the gang to top speed on another against-the-odds mission. Fun fact: The BMW M5 models seen on screen are not actually M models at all. Instead, the filmmakers used 14 modified BMW 5 Series sedans to double as M5 in the shots.
