BUILT BY HAND.

Painstaking manual work at the BMW M Manufaktur in Garching converted the high-performance base car into the BMW M8 MotoGP™ Safety Car, preparing it to appear as the course car in the world’s fastest motorcycle racing series

This process included the addition of numerous BMW M Performance Parts, many of which are available as retrofit parts for the BMW M8 production model. These emphasise the sporty appearance of the Safety Car and meet all the functional requirements for aerodynamics, cooling and lightweight construction.

The highlights include the BMW M Performance titanium sports exhaust system* and BMW M Performance Parts in carbon design, such as tailpipe finisher*, engine cover, rear diffuser and side skirts.

In order to complete the transformation from BMW M8 Competition to MotoGP™ Safety Car, special racing and safety features were also installed. These include a bonnet with ‘motorsport lock’, customised carbon flaps and the BMW M8 GTE rear wing.

The Safety Car is also illuminated by flashing corona headlight rings, LED lights on the roof with bracket and a front grille LED flasher.

UNBEATABLE DYNAMICS.

With the BMW M8 Competition as its base, it goes without saying that the BMW M8 MotoGP™ Safety Car is not lacking in performance and driving dynamics. The M power under the bonnet comes from the most powerful engine ever developed for a BMW M GmbH car. The high-revving V8 unit with M TwinPower Turbo technology develops 460 kW/625 hp and accelerates from zero to 100 km/h in 3.2 seconds. The high-performance power unit teams up with an eight-speed M Steptronic transmission with Drivelogic, and the engine’s power is channelled to the road via the M xDrive all-wheeldrive system.

Among the special features is a newly developed integrated braking system, an M specific version of which presents the driver with two different brake pedal feel settings.

The precise interaction between powertrain, chassis technology and aerodynamics has been carefully honed over the course of intensive testing at the BMW Group’s test track near Miramas in southern France, the winter testing centre in Arjeplog, Sweden and the Nürburgring’s Nordschleife circuit, along with other racetracks. Experience collected from the development of the BMW M8 GTE racing car also played an important role in the configuration process.

  • The models illustrated include optional equipment.

The values of fuel consumptions, CO2 emissions and energy consumptions shown were determined according to the European Regulation (EC) 715/2007 in the version applicable at the time of type approval. The figures refer to a vehicle with basic configuration in Germany and the range shown considers optional equipment and the different size of wheels and tires available on the selected model.

The values are already based on the new WLTP regulation and are translated back into NEDC-equivalent values in order to ensure the comparison between the vehicles. [With respect to these vehicles, for vehicle related taxes or other duties based (at least inter alia) on CO2-emissions the CO2 values may differ to the values stated here.]

The CO2 efficiency specifications are determined according to Directive 1999/94/EC and the European Regulation in its current version applicable. The values shown are based on the fuel consumption, CO2 values and energy consumptions according to the NEDC cycle for the classification.

For further information about the official fuel consumption and the specific CO2 emission of new passenger cars can be taken out of the „handbook of fuel consumption, the CO2 emission and power consumption of new passenger cars“, which is available at all selling points and at https://www.dat.de/angebote/verlagsprodukte/leitfaden-kraftstoffverbrauch.html.
