Impressive Power and Innovation.A closer look: the BMW X3 M and BMW X4 M engine.

There are many reasons why BMW M cars have such exceptional driving dynamics: the highly dynamic chassis, optimised aerodynamics and – in particular – the highly developed engine that is always precisely tailored to the overall concept. This is why the new BMW X3 M and BMW X4 M – the first high-performance M models in the mid-size Sports Activity Vehicle (SAV) and Sports Activity Coupe (SAC) segments – are equipped with a newly-developed 6-cylinder inline engine. Thanks to its track-tested cooling and oil supply systems, linear power development and extremely high torque levels, the engine represents a new high-point for a 6-cylinder inline petrol engine from BMW. Equipped with the latest M TwinPower Turbo technology update, both models hit the 100 km/h mark in 4.2* (4.1**) seconds.

NEW CRANKSHAFT AND NEW CYLINDER HEAD.

The new 6-cylinder inline engine has been completely redesigned with a forged crankshaft whose exceptional torsional resistance allows it to handle extremely high torque levels. Low in weight, it has a reduced rotating mass to feed engine’s high-revving instincts. The closed-deck design of the 6-cylinder engine’s crankcase ensures it is incredibly rigid, paving the way for higher combustion pressure and optimised power output.

The newly developed cylinder head, which also clearly bears the signature M inspiration from motorsport, also deserves special attention. Its core is manufactured using 3D printing, an additive manufacturing process that enables geometric forms to be created that are beyond the capability of conventional metal casting techniques. 3D printing technology has cut the weight of the new engine’s cylinder head core and allowed its coolant ducts to be routed in a way that optimises temperature management.

M TWINPOWER TURBO AND HIGH PRECISION INJECTION.

The latest incarnation of M TwinPower Turbo technology makes a decisive contribution to the engine’s increased performance. It features two mono-scroll turbochargers, which supply compressed air to cylinders 1-3 and 4-6 respectively. The engine’s power output is further enhanced through the use of upgraded compressors and an indirect intercooler supplied by a low-temperature circuit. A flow-optimised air intake system reducespressure losses, while an electronically controlled wastegate (which can be closed quickly) enhances responsiveness. The wide-opening wastegate also heightens the effectiveness of the catalytic converters positioned close to the engine.

The increase in performance is also supported by High Precision Injection technology that raises maximum injection pressure from 200 bar to 350 bar, enabling extremely efficient mixture preparation. The fine atomisation of the fuel in the combustion chambers minimises emissions, especially underfull acceleration loads and at high speeds. The package of technology is rounded off by VALVETRONIC fully variable valve timing and Double-VANOS variable camshaft timing.

COOLING CONCEPT AND OIL SUPPLY.

Developed with motorsport know-how.

The new engine’s track-tested cooling system has been designed to work with the engine’s extraordinary performance and comprises one central radiator and two positioned either side of it. It also includes an additional engine oil cooler and a separate transmission oil cooler. This sophisticated system ensures that optimum operating temperatures are maintained for all powertrain components at all times, both in everyday use on short urban journeys and during track use.

BMW M motorsport expertise was also put to work in the creation of the oil supply system, which is designed to meet the challenges of dynamic track driving. The engine’s weight-minimised oil sump has two separate chambers and an integrated suction channel.

An additional suction stage allows the map-controlled oil pump to draw lubricant from the smaller chamber, which steps in when extra capacity is needed. This ensures a reliable supply of oil at all times, even under extreme lateral and longitudinal acceleration.

Official data on power consumption and electric range were determined in accordance with the mandatory measurement procedure and comply with Regulation (EU) 715/2007 valid at the time of type approval. In case of a range, figures in the NEDC take into account differences in the selected wheel and tire size; figures in the WLTP take into account any optional equipment. WLTP values are used for assessing taxes and other vehicle-related charges that are (also) based on CO2 emissions, as well as for the purposes of vehicle-specific subsidies, if applicable. Where applicable, the NEDC values listed were calculated based on the new WLTP measurement procedure and then converted back to the NEDC measurement procedure for comparability reasons. For newly type-tested vehicles since 01.01.2021, the official data no longer exist according to NEDC, but only according to WLTP. For more information on the WLTP and NEDC measurement procedures, see https://www.bmw.com/wltp.
