Ahead of the pack: when it comes to spectacular drifts, BMW M cars are always leading the charge. Whether continuously drifting for 374 kilometres or staring down the abyss of an aircraft carrier runway, they redefine what’s possible. Watch the top ten drifts from BMW M.
THE MOST SPECTACULAR BMW M DRIFTS.
#1 A CUTTING EDGE STUNT IN THE BMW M2 COMPETITION.
Slicing through 87 straw poles with a samurai sword in 60 seconds is a current Guinness world record, set by a master swordsman. So surely the idea of breaking this in a car is too crazy to actually attempt? Well, with the BMW M2 Competition and the prospect of a spectacular automotive stunt, the challenge was accepted! As it took its place at the starting gate, the outstanding driving dynamics and precision of this 410 hp high-performance coupe assumed the utmost importance. Specially prepared with the sharpest of blades at its rear, drift angle, distance to the target and speed had to be perfectly alligned in order to cut through the straw poles with the accuracy required. See for yourself if the M2 Competition pulled it off and set a new world record.
#2 COFFEE TO DRIFT.
In M Town, the city of dreams for all high-performance car enthusiasts, the idea of getting a cup of freshly-brewed coffee in the morning has been taken to a whole new level. Instead of queing up and waiting for your name to be called, here citizens can grab one to go straight from the barista’s hand as they perform donuts around the counter. Coffee to drift? Now you’re talking.
#4 BMW M5 GUINNESS WORLD RECORD DRIFT.
At the beginning of December 2017, it was time for BMW M to set the record for the world’s longest-ever drift. With the new BMW M5 – the latest edition of the ultimate drift sedan, and Johan Schwartz – the 2013 record holder in this discipline, they achieved the seemingly-impossible: the BMW M5 drifted for a sensational 374.2 kilometres within eight hours – a new Guinness World Record. As if it wasn’t already difficult enough, the vehicle was even refuelled by a second M5 (F10) mid-drift!
#5 DRIFT HAPPENS - THE BMW M4 COUPÉ.
In 2014, the BMW M4 Coupé was introduced to the BMW M family to build on the success of the M3 Coupé. On this occasion, 48 vehicles from the BMW M fleet formed the most powerful letter in the world, which was then conquered by the new M4 in the ultimate drifting style.
#6 THE BMW M4 TAKES ON AN AIRCRAFT CARRIER.
Staring into the abyss: this drift is not for those prone to seasickness. In this clip, the BMW M4 literally pushes itself to the limit – on an aircraft carrier. The ultimate playground for adrenaline-laden driving manoeuvres, there’s no margin for error on this ocean-bound track! The unique deck of this elaborate naval ship was painstakingly recreated using movie-quality CGI.
#7 BMW M235i – THE EPIC DRIFTMOB.
When a roundabout in Cape Town was mysteriously closed to the general public, the gathering local population were treated less to a flashmob and more to an epic ‘driftmob’. Some stunt drivers were on hand to drift around the asphalt circuit with a series of BMW M235i cars. It goes without saying, but do not try this at home.
#8 BMW M3 ‘MÜNCHNER WIRTE’ GOES CRAZY.
The livery design of the special BMW M3 ‘Münchner Wirte’ was designed to great guests to Munich Oktoberfest in 2015 and harks back to that of the legendary BMW M1 Procar from 1981. There’s not a sausage or stein in sight in this clip, though. For some, a spin in this 431 hp high-performance sedan might induce more dizziness than a visit to the legendary Oktoberfest beerhalls.
#9 ANOTHER M BRICK IN THE WALL.
There’s no doubt that the BMW 1 Series M Coupé is a precision tool for spectacular power drifts. But for drifting at high speed through a series of solid concrete walls? This clip is not for the faint hearted!
#10 BMW 1 SERIES M COUPÉ – DON'T BE AFRAID OF HEIGHTS.
Have you ever wondered what happens when you put a BMW 1 Series M Coupé on top of the world’s highest helipad and let it rip? Yes, the result is as hair-raisingly sensational as it sounds. Whether you suffer from vertigo or not, this is a sight that must be seen.
