In the new BMW M5, xDrive technology meets the technology of the M automobile – including the Active M Differential, special kinematics, different track widths, the characteristic M suspension and damper set-up, larger rim widths and special high-performance sports tyres with greater grip.

5 configurations

are available to the driver of a BMW M5 with M xDrive. These result from the combination of two DSC modes in DSC on (4WD) and MDM (4WD Sport), and three M xDrive modes in DSC off (4WD, 4WD Sport, 2WD). While 4WD and 4WD Sport distribute the torque across all four tyres, the BMW M5 in 2WD mode puts all the power in the back wheels.

is the number of data from all relevant sensors, which converge in the central vehicle dynamics management. This monitors real-time parameters from the accelerator pedal position, steering angle, road speed, slip at the front and rear axle, longitudinal and transverse acceleration, friction coefficient, yaw rate, etc. This information is analysed to establish the vehicle’s current situation. M xDrive can then support the driver in every set of circumstances.

per curve. When accelerating out of a bend, M xDrive successively puts more and more torque on the front axle when it detects decreasing lateral acceleration. At that moment, it becomes possible to transmit the longitudinal forces without understeering. This occurs so gradually that it’s possible to exit the bend with a slight drift, as one would expect from an M automobile. It feels as if you are coming out of the curve in a controlled catapult.
