SWEDEN - EXCLUSIVE AND GUARANTEED TO BE CLOUDLESS.

Sweden

Anyone travelling to the northern part of Sweden between September and the end of March will most likely be able to observe the Northern Lights. One highly-recommended region is the area around Abisko in Swedish Lapland. Why? Well, above the local 70-kilometre-long Torneträsk Lake, there is a strange weather phenomenon nicknamed ‘The Blue Hole of Abisko’. This is an area of clear sky that is cloud-free even when the rest of the region is covered.

You can also spend a night here at the Aurora Sky Station, which sits 900 metres above sea level. Travel publisher Lonely Planet has named it the best place in the world to see the ghostly glow of the polar lights. The station offers not only a guided ‘Aurora tour’ through the freezing Arctic (extra-warm clothing included), but after the hike, you can make yourself comfortable in front of the fireplace and enjoy a fine four-course meal of Nordic cuisine.

NORWAY - A LUXURY TRIP TO THE NORTHERN LIGHTS.

At around the same time of year, the Northern Lights can be admired in all their glory in Norway, with especially good views on offer in Lofoten, Vesteralen and Spitsbergen. These destinations are notable because during the polar night, which lasts from November to February, you can even observe Aurora Borealis at lunchtime. Visitors who make their way to Tromsø, northern Norway’s largest city, from the end of September to the end of March also have a high chance of seeing the Northern Lights. Meanwhile, those seeking a more exclusive experience can board a luxuriously-equipped Hurtigruten cruise ship along the Norwegian archipelagos. Guests are greeted with a wake-up service that rings out when the polar lights appear on the horizon.

FINLAND - FULLY CONNECTED IN THE HUNT FOR THE POLAR LIGHTS.

Finland

A similarly helpful idea to highlight when the Northern Lights are shining has been adopted by some Finnish hotels in the north of the country. Each hotel guest receives a so-called ‘Aurora alarm’, which is similar to a pager and makes a noise to alert them when the nocturnal delights are visible. The small unit is controlled remotely by the Northern Lights Research Centre, which is located in the municipality of Sodankylä. The best places to witness this sky spectacle in Finland
are areas like Nellim, Utsjoki, Kakslauttanen and Ivalo. If you arrive by car, you’ll cross the breathtaking Finnish Lakeland.

SCOTLAND - FURTHER NORTH THAN YOU MIGHT EXPECT.

Scotland

If you hope to see the Northern Lights on the Scottish mainland on clear days, your best bet is to head for the Shetland Islands in the North Atlantic, according to Aurora aficionados. The islands lie at the same latitude as the island of Nunivak in Alaska – home to the best conditions for enjoying the bright parade of lights in the sky. Another good alternative is the Orkney Islands.

ICELAND - THE SHINING ISLAND.

As a travel destination, Iceland blows most of the others out of the water with its natural wonders - you’ll find impressive glaciers, active volcanoes and hot springs here. If you intend to visit and go Aurora hunting, you should head to the UNESCO World Heritage Site Thingvellir National Park near the capital Reykjavik. However, in theory, the lights can be observed all over the island, given Iceland’s northern, secluded location.

CANADA - A NIGHT SKY WITH INFINITE DISTANCES.

Canada

With its endless wide tundra to the north of the country, Canada shines brightly from September to March with a completely natural, but Hollywood-esque, light show. Thanks to the country’s landscape, the sky over Canada looks as big as it would anywhere else on the planet - which makes for a gigantic colour dance of polar light. The best regions are the Yukon Territory (which borders Alaska), Manitoba on Hudson Bay, or the areas around the city of Calgary.

ALASKA - NORTHERN LIGHTS THE AMERICAN WAY.

Alaska

Alaska is not only the northernmost state in the US, it is also the only one in which the bright flashes of the Northern Lights can be admired. Naturally, this means that many Americans use the winter months to travel to the areas around Anchorage and Fairbanks to catch a glimpse of this marvelous neon display. Despite its popularity with tourists, it’s still a worthwhile trip: the nocturnal sky can remain illuminated for up to an hour at a time - guaranteeing memories to last a lifetime!

GREENLAND - UNIQUE EXPEDITIONS AWAIT AURORA EXPLORERS.

Greenland

Apart from the Antarctic, Greenland is the country with the world’s lowest population density. This means that artificial light, which can limit the visibility of the Northern Lights, is sparse. Although the island is mostly made up of an ice desert, restricting travel within it, the eastern and southern coastal regions are the perfect places to experience Aurora Borealis. No matter where you are on the island, you can witness it at any time!
