Yes, it’s not easy for us either. But the production of the current generation BMW M3 (F80) will be coming to an end. BMW M Magazine: Mr Schmidt, when did you become an “M enthusiast” and what was the reason for this?

B. Schmidt: The BMW M3 was already fascinating to me when I didn’t have a driver’s license. As a teenager it was simply THE dream to own and drive a BMW M3. However, this goal also appeared to be so far away when I obtained my driving license – first as a pupil and later as a student. One experience was particularly formative for me: in August 1993 I had just turned 18 and visited the Oldtimer GP at the Nürburgring with friends. There, I was allowed to enjoy a lap in a race-taxi, which was then a BMW M5 (E34) and I was really surprised at how fast the M5 could be moved around the Nordschleife. In addition to this, I’ll also never forget the Avus Blue BMW M3 (E36), whose young driver was waiting for admission at the entrance. I really wanted to be the driver myself.

Why did it have to be this generation BMW M3?

First of all, I’ve been excited about the design of the current M3 (as well as the M4) since the day it was introduced. I ordered my first M4 without waiting for a test drive, simply because I liked the shape so much. Over time, I realised that I found the M3 even more beautiful, especially because of its strikingly flared rear fenders. Finally, I wanted to have an M3 with a stick shift, since I have so much fun driving my BMW M2 with it.

What is the most appealing thing about a BMW M car – especially the M3 – for you?

For me, the BMW M3 has always been an all-rounder that could optimally combine everyday life and holidays, work and family, the race track and city traffic with sporty driving pleasure. The M3 also always reminds me of my childhood dream, meaning I can appreciate driving such a fascinating automobile even more today.

What’s so special about BMW Individual equipment?

I feel that being able to individually customise a vehicle is especially important for someone like me, who doesn’t purely see a vehicle as a means of transport but considers it an opportunity to bring one’s own personality to the fore. If you have your own signature in the interior trim and on the carbon strut in the engine compartment, you know that this very personal M3 has been built just for you. I think it’s great that BMW M, with its individual equipment, has given me the opportunity to be so involved in the personalisation of my M3.

Why did you decide on the bicolour interior in black/mugello red?

After it turned out that the M3 would become Frozen Dark Grey metallic on the outside, it was also clear that the interior would have to be red in the style of my old E92 (space grey/fox red). Dark grey and red is a classic colour combination. Originally, I considered an interior completely in Mugello Red, but I wasn’t sure from the outset whether this would be a little too red. Then, I happened to see a picture of the interior of an M4 in Bicolour Black / Mugello Red in the current “Manufaktur Lookbook” and was immediately thrilled.

It is a special experience for me to pick up my new car at BMW Welt. In order to do this, I took enough time to celebrate this day together with good friends or family. Shared joy is a double joy and the day will remain unforgettable.

Do you drive the vehicle in your everyday life, or does it have collector status and is stored in your garage?

Both. I will drive the M3 on selected rides, but also in everyday life. From the start, it has collector status, and is therefore driven on occasion and maintained well. In winter months, it can look forward to the spring, where it is well-protected and kept at the right temperature. Since the M3 carries my signature, it will stay with me forever. It’s irrelevant how many kilometres I drive with it. Cars are there to drive – even collector’s cars.
