Four BMW models as design objects, four designers as experts. Internationally sought-after interior designer Joyce Wang talks about comfort and well-being, both driving influences on her work, which focuses mainly on hotels and restaurants. Corresponding to Wang's philosophy, the BMW X7 M50d (fuel consumption combined: 7.4 – 7.0 l/100 km; CO2 emissions combined: 193 – 185 g/km) is photographed in front of the striking architecture of the 7132 Hotel in Vals, Switzerland – a five-star luxury hotel and wellness retreat with world-class cuisine, located within the picturesque setting of a traditional Swiss alpine village.

// The international lifestyle magazine Monocle has offices in global art and design hotspots such as London, Tokyo, Zurich and Hong Kong. In its latest issue, four international designers talk about their inspiration and understanding of luxury, innovation and technology.

Monocle Magazine: What does luxury mean to you?

Joyce Wang: Comfort and privacy. We first became known for using metals and hard, masculine shapes, but I’m now focusing more on comfort. Society is so obsessed with the shape of things but actually being cocooned by a slouchy couch can be luxurious.

What are elements of the Joyce Wang signature style?

We don’t have a set style – more of a set approach, maybe. I like to give common materials another chance by placing them in an environment that elevates them. For Ammo (editror's note: a Hong Kong based restaurant designed by Wang) we used copper piping from a local store for the light fixtures and it was perceived as a luxurious finish. That made me think that I want an element of that in all of our projects.

// Joyce Wang graduated from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Architecture and Materials Science and has maintained studios in Hong Kong and London since 2013. Wang's work includes designing the interiors of world-class hotels and restaurants around the world, including in Las Vegas, Vancouver and Hong Kong. Her reinterpretation of the traditional Mandarin Oriental Hyde Park in London in 2017 caused a sensation. With her designs, Wang creates a microcosm of well-being in which the guest feels at home in a cocoon of luxurious comfort. As she reveals, she finds inspiration in travel, fashion and film.

How do you stay successful while continuing to have fun?

I really like the people I work with. That’s the main thing. Even when I talk about work with my team we can still joke around. We’re only doing design at the end of the day, so it helps that we can laugh at ourselves and not take it too seriously.

Official data on power consumption and electric range were determined in accordance with the mandatory measurement procedure and comply with Regulation (EU) 715/2007 valid at the time of type approval. In case of a range, figures in the NEDC take into account differences in the selected wheel and tire size; figures in the WLTP take into account any optional equipment. WLTP values are used for assessing taxes and other vehicle-related charges that are (also) based on CO2 emissions, as well as for the purposes of vehicle-specific subsidies, if applicable. Where applicable, the NEDC values listed were calculated based on the new WLTP measurement procedure and then converted back to the NEDC measurement procedure for comparability reasons. For newly type-tested vehicles since 01.01.2021, the official data no longer exist according to NEDC, but only according to WLTP. For more information on the WLTP and NEDC measurement procedures, see https://www.bmw.com/wltp.

For further information about the official fuel consumption and the specific CO2 emission of new passenger cars can be taken out of the „handbook of fuel consumption, the CO2 emission and power consumption of new passenger cars“, which is available at all selling points and at https://www.dat.de/co2/.
