Quite literally a shining example of what the Bavarian carmaker can do in terms of automotive lighting technology.

Laser light of the future.

Laser light impresses with the enormous reach of its luminosity – up to 600 metres – and now these advantages are combined with the glare-free high-beam assistant BMW Selective Beam. In spite of the 30% lower energy consumption, the bundling of parallel lights achieves an intensity of luminosity that is ten times higher than that of halogen, xenon or LED.

Three-dimensional picture.

Rear lights and turn signals are created with organic light-emitting diodes, so-called OLEDs, which produce light in thin-film semiconducting layers of organic materials. The arrangement of the luminous surfaces has an almost sculptural effect, and because of the flat design of the OLEDs, it requires particularly little space. In contrast to LEDs, which emit light from a point, OLEDs illuminate over a completely and uniform surface. Depending on the driving mode, the L-shape is either larger and wider, or – in the sports mode via a partial control of the OLED-elements – narrower and sharper than a highly-precise light strip.
