A BMW M4 in Urban Green isn’t something you see every day. The same applies to an M enthusiast like David alias DSCHMDT: The 23-year old photographer and Instagrammer from Potsdam puts his cars at the forefront of his professional work and indeed gives every BMW M that he photographs a very special look. His motto: Do it with passion!

BMW M Magazine: David, you drive a BMW M4 in Urban Green. Why this striking colour?

David: Anyone who knows me knows that I love black cars. After five years of “all black”, I was looking for a colour that you only seldom see on the street to make my M4 even more special than it already is. And Urban Green in combination with the M Performance Parts in Carbon really caught my eye. I was originally inspired by a post from BMW M with an M3 Competition with Performance Parts in BMW Individual Urban Green.

“It is especially important to me to entertain and inspire the community with my content.”

What do you like best about your M automobile?

First and foremost the sporty character and the fact that it’s still suitable for everyday use. At the press of a button, the M4 turns into an uncompromising sports car – and that’s something you can’t get enough of. Pure emotion.

BMW M5 E34

Unforgettable experience: BMW M5 E34.

What was the first experience with the BMW M brand that you can remember?

It was in 2012. I was 14 years old when my uncle picked me up to go for a drive in his new X5 M E70, that was the very first X5 M. Afterwards I was smitten by M – and still am today. M enthusiasm runs in my family. My uncle’s been a passionate M driver since 1992 and still raves today about his BMW M5 E34.

And your own first BMW?

My first BMW was also my very first car - a BMW 118i F20 in Black Sapphire metallic with an M Sports package. It was with this car that I began my Instagram journey as DSCHMDT in April 2015.

And what came after that?

Two years later, I wanted something with more power and switched to a BMW M140i F21 in Black Sapphire. It was very tough to part with the 118i, it was after all my very first car and I’d had so many experiences with it. But the M140i was for me the perfect upgrade – and lots of road trips, photo-shoots and masses of driving pleasure made my time with the M140i unforgettable. In the summer of 2019, I realized a dream and ordered a BMW M4 Competition, which then replaced my M140i. But the M140i will always be something very special for me. The car remains a masterpiece. The M4 is of course in a different league and at the moment I can’t imagine a car better suited to my needs. I’m really happy with it, just starting the engine every morning gives me a buzz. Pure goosebumps.

For decades, BMW M has had a very special motorsport DNA. And the unmistakeable look and sound make BMW M a unique marque. You can spot a BMW M a long way off, which I really like.

How important is it for you to share your enthusiasm for BMW M with other M fans?

The BMW and BMW M community is in its size and spirit unique on the automotive scene. I don’t create my content for myself, but for the community. So it’s all the more important for me to entertain and above all to inspire. Over time, it’s developed into a great passion. Texts like “Thanks to your pictures I’ve ordered a BMW M in Birch Green” make me very proud and give me a big boost.

Which Instagram accounts that you follow?

Quite a few. For example @karl_shakur and @thecarsanova. Karl's visual language inspires me again and again and what Frederick captures with his photos is pure magic.

What constitutes a good car Instagrammer for you?

He or she should be authentic, develop their own visual style, ideally achieve their own recognisability – and the most important thing: have fun doing it.

David, thank you for talking to us!

Official data on power consumption and electric range were determined in accordance with the mandatory measurement procedure and comply with Regulation (EU) 715/2007 valid at the time of type approval. In case of a range, figures in the NEDC take into account differences in the selected wheel and tire size; figures in the WLTP take into account any optional equipment. WLTP values are used for assessing taxes and other vehicle-related charges that are (also) based on CO2 emissions, as well as for the purposes of vehicle-specific subsidies, if applicable. Where applicable, the NEDC values listed were calculated based on the new WLTP measurement procedure and then converted back to the NEDC measurement procedure for comparability reasons. For newly type-tested vehicles since 01.01.2021, the official data no longer exist according to NEDC, but only according to WLTP.
