HIGH-PERFORMANCE GOES LARGE.

High-Performance goes large.Ten years of the BMW X5 M and X6 M – a portrait.

Ten years ago, BMW M presented its first SAVs: the BMW X5 M and X6 M brought the first four-wheel drive and the first turbocharger to its line-up. The sportily tuned chassis and the enormously powerful engine of these two high-performance SAVs still guarantees adrenaline-charged driving dynamics to this day. Back in 2009, the driving dynamics were unrivalled, making the BMW X5 M and X6 M the most acclaimed driving vehicles in their class at the time and giving them a reputation that still precedes them.

THE FIRST OF THEIR KIND.

At the 2009 international Auto Shanghai motor show, BMW M had a big surprise up its sleeve. With the launch of the BMW X5 M (E70), several new technologies were introduced into its range. The M-specific all-wheel drive xDrive and the turbocharged engine were features that no standard M automobile had had before. The body shape of the X5 M also represented completely new terrain for BMW M. In the summer of 2009, the world's first high-performance SAC was unveiled when the BMW X6 M celebrated its premiere in Atlanta.

"The balance is simply perfect – the engineers at BMW M have done a great job."
AutoBild, 2009

WHAT THE PRESS SAID.

The first media test drive for the X5 M and X6 M was not conducted on the US state of Georgia’s extensive highways – instead BMW M sent journalists to chase the fastest lap times on the Raceway Road Atlanta motorsport circuit. At that time this was a more than unusual for an SAV, the press found. Their conclusion: very impressive.

“The X6 M does a similar lap time (8mins 30secs) to an E46 M3 round the Nürburgring. And that’s just absurd. Because going fast in a straight line isn’t that hard with plenty of power. Going fast around a circuit is.“
Top Gear, 2009
"The new rear axle drive of the xDrive all-wheel system, which distributes the power as its needed, ensures that the BMW steams ahead like it was on train tracks."
Autozeitung, 2009
“The X6 M does more than go fast in a straight line. Lapping the Road Atlanta racetrack during our preview drive, the car also flew around corners with awe-inspiring ease.”
Car and Driver, 2009
"The driving behaviour of the BMW X5 M is by no means reminiscent of that of a typical SUV; rather, it behaves very similarly to a powerful sedan pushing the limits, hardly understeering, precisely following the line and with no load change reactions."
Auto Motor und Sport, 2011

CHARACTER. PERFORMANCE.

The M engineers did a lot of work to avoid any room for criticism of the new models, placing a particular focus on driving dynamics.

The four-wheel drive BMW xDrive was perfectly matched to the special performance characteristics, as was the Dynamic Performance Control standard on both models. In conjunction with the M specific chassis design, including Adaptive Drive and a newly developed Servotronic steering system, this resulted in the unique characteristics of the X5 M and the X6 M: exceptional stability and precisely controlled steering that set the basis for a highly dynamic driving experience.

UNBRIDLED POWER.

The power centre of the first generation of the X5 M and X6 M is located under the bonnet, as is customary at BMW M. The newly developed V8 engine with M TwinPower Turbo technology, cross-cylinder bank exhaust manifold and gasoline direct injection, helped the two M automobiles to achieve undreamt-of propulsion. The 408 kW (555 PS) of power and the enormous torque of 680 Nm create an impressive driving experience that will long be remembered.

A SECOND DEMONSTRATION OF POWER.

Although the recipe for maximum driving pleasure in a SAV was known, the limits had not yet been reached. With the second generation of the BMW X5 M (F85) and X6 M (F86), BMW M further enhanced their driving dynamics, without neglecting the everyday features that are important for models in the X family. The result was again impressive.

With the standard 8-speed Steptronic transmission, further developed M chassis with electronically adjustable dampers and Dynamic Drive roll stabilisation, BMW M provided both vehicles with the latest technology. This includes Launch Control, adapted from motorsport, combined with optimised mixed tyres. Coupled with the increased engine torque of 750 Newton metres, the BMW X5 M and X6 M accelerate from a standstill to 100 km/h in an impressive 4.2 seconds.

Explosive ///Mix: german presenter Matthias Malmedie meets the new BMW X6 M.

Presenter Matthias Malmedie is the authority on German television for automobile enthusiasts. You could say: M for stands for motorsport, M stands for BMW M – and M stands for Malmedie. The presenter of the TV programme ‘GRIP - Das Motormagazin’ has a proven weakness for particularly powerful vehicles and thus also a special affinity for BMW M. In short: when tires squeal and smoke on German television or the internet, Matthias Malmedie is usually not far away. His unmistakable conclusion on his first encounter with the BMW X6 M: “Awesome!”

Official data on power consumption and electric range were determined in accordance with the mandatory measurement procedure and comply with Regulation (EU) 715/2007 valid at the time of type approval. In case of a range, figures in the NEDC take into account differences in the selected wheel and tire size; figures in the WLTP take into account any optional equipment. WLTP values are used for assessing taxes and other vehicle-related charges that are (also) based on CO2 emissions, as well as for the purposes of vehicle-specific subsidies, if applicable. Where applicable, the NEDC values listed were calculated based on the new WLTP measurement procedure and then converted back to the NEDC measurement procedure for comparability reasons. For newly type-tested vehicles since 01.01.2021, the official data no longer exist according to NEDC, but only according to WLTP. For more information on the WLTP and NEDC measurement procedures, see https://www.bmw.com/wltp.
