The BMW M2 MotoGP Safety Car.

FROM ZERO TO SAFETY.The BMW M2 MotoGP Safety Car.

With the BMW M2 Coupé we are facing one of the most powerful performance cars of the BMW M range – and the most protective one. And that’s the story how it became what it is now: ten days, a thousand working hours, a dozen specialists: engineers from BMW M GmbH at Garching put the final, painstaking touches to the BMW M2 Coupé (Fuel consumption in l/100 km (combined): 8.5 to 7.9. CO2 emissions in g/km (combined): 199 to 185), handcrafting it into a safety car – optimally fine-tuned for service in professional racing. Its goal: maximum performance for maximum safety. The result: the perfect upgrade for motorsport. Since 2016, the BMW M2 Safety Car has been making its reliable rounds as the lead car in MotoGP.

A concept that grips.

Thanks to perfectly harmonised performance parts, also available as accessories for the series model, the M2 Safety Car braves the extreme conditions on the racetrack. An easy-to-adjust rear spoiler as well as a lightweight front flap and diffuser provide optimal grip on 20-inch tyres. BMW also installs everything a high-performance coupé needs for pole position on the asphalt: threaded suspension, wear-resistant, gold-coloured carbon ceramic brakes, safety roll cage, all-round lighting and a fire extinguisher.

Leading the field in any race situation.

In the safety car, the standard 370hp engine has more room to breathe, as the exhaust system has been completely hollowed out. Silencers, catalytic converters, exhaust flap systems? Not applicable! The sound has free rein, and the BMW M2 MotoGP Safety Car has an acoustic lead even over motorcycles in complex race situations.

New safety car in progress.

The BMW M2 Safety Car is also part of the new season’s official fleet of MotoGP vehicles. It has its first roll-out as a lead car at the race meeting in Jerez on May 4th. BMW engineers are already hard at work behind the scenes on the next safety car. Which model it’ll be and when it comes into service, you’ll of course be the first to know right here.
