EMOTIONAL SOUND EXPERIENCE FOR THE SENSES.

Whilst the peace and quiet of electric driving offers hitherto unknown comfort, at the same time it opens up a gap to the emotionality of the driving experience. BMW M IconicSounds Electric offer a great range for customers who want to enjoy driving pleasure with all their senses. In future, electric driving pleasure will be enhanced by acoustic feedback with every movement of the accelerator. Analogue to the driving modes selected by the driver at the push of a button, the engine sound orientates itself to the corresponding driving situation and the driver’s personal preferences.

“For the electric BMW M automobiles we’ve developed an engine sound that especially underlines the emotional driving experience and makes sure that the performance is even more intensely tangible.”
Sound designers in conversation: Hans Zimmer, film composer and Academy Award winner, and Renzo Vitale, Creative Director Sound BMW Group.

POWERFUL AND INTERACTIVE.

The Sound of the BMW i4 M50.

In the version developed especially for electric BMW M automobiles, the engine sound is especially energetic. Moreover, the difference between the COMFORT and SPORT modes is particularly strong. In general, the engine sound develops a challengingly powerful and technical sonic image that doesn’t always have to be harmonious. In the course of acceleration, the sounds develops an intensity which authentically reflects the performance character of the vehicle.

“The moment in which a BMW M automobile accelerates is a pure goosebump moment. We’ve translated this feeling into a driving sound that expresses a mixture of superior power and flowing energy.”

How the future of driving will sound.

In the basic setting, BMW M IconicSounds Electric convey the character of an electric BMW M via a strikingly transparent tone colour with powerful components. While in COMFORT mode the M version of the BMW i4 initially creates an immersive atmosphere characterized by effortlessness, stepping on the gas at once demonstrates the immediate connection between sound and vehicle. And with increasing weight and speed, the sound experience intensifies. In particular in SPORT mode, whose sound spectrum is more emotional and powerful, the sound reveals more about the output power. Within milliseconds, engine processes are registered and acceleration, load change or recuperation are reflected acoustically. Only when driving in ECO PRO mode is audible feedback absent, the soundless drive underlining the driver’s decision to use an especially efficient driving mode.

The new engine sounds developed together with Hans Zimmer will be experienceable in the course of 2022.

Due to regular software updates, screen designs in the communication may differ from the actual screen design in your car.

Official data on power consumption and electric range were determined in accordance with the mandatory measurement procedure and comply with Regulation (EU) 715/2007 valid at the time of type approval. In case of a range, figures in the NEDC take into account differences in the selected wheel and tire size; figures in the WLTP take into account any optional equipment. WLTP values are used for assessing taxes and other vehicle-related charges that are (also) based on CO2 emissions, as well as for the purposes of vehicle-specific subsidies, if applicable. Where applicable, the NEDC values listed were calculated based on the new WLTP measurement procedure and then converted back to the NEDC measurement procedure for comparability reasons. For newly type-tested vehicles since 01.01.2021, the official data no longer exist according to NEDC, but only according to WLTP. For more information on the WLTP and NEDC measurement procedures, see https://www.bmw.com/wltp.
