Forty years after the world premiere of the first BMW 7 Series, M GmbH brought the definitive top model of the line-up onto the roads just in time for the anniversary. The BMW M760Li xDrive G12 offered plenty of space, maximum comfort, luxurious equipment, and modern technologies. Combined with an M Performance V12 engine that combined unique smoothness with maximum power, the flagship redefined the standards in the luxury sedan segment. In the USA, BMW M marketed the long-wheelbase model simply as the M760i xDrive, omitting the 'L' because the extended-wheelbase version is standard there.

The BMW M760Li xDrive G12 was the first model to feature the then-new M Performance TwinPower Turbo V12 petrol engine. Thanks to its generously sized 6.6-liter displacement, this not only resulted in a drive system with excellent running characteristics that set new standards in the luxury class. The V12 engine also set standards with its impressive performance figures. 448 kW (610 hp) at 5,500 rpm and a torque of 800 Nm at 1,550 rpm catapult the luxury sedan from 0 to 100 km/h in just 3.7 seconds. The top speed is electronically limited to 250 km/h as standard. With the optional M Driver’s Package, 305 km/h can be achieved. But even this top speed is noticeably limited; in practical tests, test drivers of the German car magazine “Auto Bild” came to the conclusion that the V12 engine could reach speeds of up to 340 km/h due to the still noticeable thrust when reaching the top speed.
The power of the BMW M760Li is transferred to the road via the standard 8-speed Steptronic Sport transmission in conjunction with the intelligent xDrive all-wheel drive system. The transmission provides specific M Performance tuning of the shift programs, which is noticeable in sporty gear changes and higher downshift spontaneity across the entire rev range and is specially adapted to the characteristics of the V12 engine.

The BMW M760Li xDrive G12 offers the ultimate in driving comfort. Its innovative Executive Drive Pro suspension system provides active roll stabilization, minimizing body movements. In combination with performance tyres on exclusive 20-inch M light-alloy wheels, the BMW M760Li xDrive achieved the best driving dynamics in its class at the time without compromising on driving comfort.
The driving dynamics also benefit from the standard Integral Active Steering in the BMW M760Li xDrive. It reduces steering effort at low speeds as well as during dynamic driving, which increases agility and driving safety. The new 19-inch M Sport brakes with blue metallic brake callipers and M logo, which were introduced with the model, round off the driving dynamics equipment of the BMW M760Li xDrive and ensure excellent deceleration.

The flagship unmistakably reads as an M Performance model from the outside as well. The enlarged air intakes in the front apron and the exclusive 20-inch M light alloy wheels in double-spoke 760M design with matt Cerium Grey finish immediately create a dynamic impression. Exclusive elements in Cerium Grey on the kidney grille, front apron, air breather and door and boot handles highlight the special status of the BMW M760Li xDrive within the entire BMW model range. This is also underlined by the V12 badges on the C-pillars, the M logos on the sides and the model lettering on the rear. Another eye-catching feature below the M logo at the rear is the M sports exhaust system with Cerium Grey galvanised twin tailpipe trims. The flap control ensures an emotionally rich sound befitting a BMW M V12 engine.

The interior of the BMW M760Li xDrive G12 also reflects the typical M Performance character. Door sill trims with illuminated V12 logo set the mood for driving pleasure, while the exclusive M leather steering wheel with M logo and Pearl Gloss Chrome multifunction buttons on the steering wheel spokes promise a luxurious driving experience. The instrument cluster with an exclusive speedometer, the dial now extending to 330 km/h, is a reminder of the performance potential of the BMW M760Li xDrive, as is the V12 logo, which is located on a BMW Individual decorative insert in piano black in the centre console, together with the gear selector and iDrive controller.
In the cockpit and rear, the exclusive Nappa leather trim, which covers not only the seat surfaces but also the seat side panels, the entire headrests, the centre armrests and the side armrests, creates an elegant atmosphere. Electrically adjustable comfort seats in the front with memory function and the Fineline black fine wood interior trim with a high-gloss metal effect round off this impression.

For those who preferred luxurious comfort to dynamic performance, the BMW M760Li xDrive V12 Excellence G12 was available. This variant did not feature the M aerodynamics package with its sporty look. Instead, the V12 Excellence rolls on 20-inch BMW Individual light alloy wheels in a high-gloss polished W-spoke 646 design. The brake callipers are finished in high-gloss Black. In contrast to its more sporty-looking counterpart, the V12 Excellence features a chrome bar extending across the front above the air intake grille. The kidney grille and all other decorative elements of the vehicle feature chrome as well.
The rear also reflects the unique character of the comfort variant. The boot lid bears the chrome-plated ‘V12’ badge. The pair of chrome-plated rectangular tailpipe embellishers are framed by an additional chrome bar. The sound of the exhaust system, which is slightly more subtle than in the sporty variant, also emphasises the difference.
In the interior, the BMW steering wheel with wood inlays — and especially the V12 emblem in the instrument cluster that lights up when the ignition is switched on — indicate that you are in the BMW M760Li xDrive V12 Excellence. The speedometer display on the comfort version of the G12 ends at 260 km/h. While the Excellence has the same acceleration figures as its sporty sibling, its top speed is limited to 250 km/h.

In 2019, the BMW M760Li xDrive and BMW M760Li xDrive V12 Excellence received an update. The new edition of the high-performance sedan is characterised by its confident presence, refined elegance and optimised handling.
The most obvious sign of the model update is the new, about 40 per cent bigger kidney grille. It lends the flagship model an even more expressive and particularly prestigious appearance. The rear has also been comprehensively redesigned; the integrated exhaust tailpipes with enlarged chrome frames and the new, flatter rear lights are particularly striking.
The interior adopts a more refined style. Exclusive Nappa leather now features additional quilting. Travel comfort is improved by enhanced acoustic insulation and a new leather steering wheel with ergonomically arranged multifunction buttons for easier operation.
The BMW M760Li xDrive combines uncompromising V12 performance with modern driving comfort and the ultimate in luxury ambience. As an expression of technological supremacy, it set new standards in the luxury sedan segment when it was launched in 2017 — either as a dynamic M statement or as refined V12 excellence.
