FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
How does BMW M Mixed Reality work?
In BMW M Mixed Reality, the real car is "taken" into the virtual world without losing the connection between driver and vehicle. For smooth driving fun, it requires three elements. First, you need a very accurate GPS signal. Multiple sensors enable the mixed reality vehicle to be located on the track while driving. A second challenge is the agility of the vehicle - that is, rolling and pitching movements, such as those that occur when accelerating and turning. The position of the accelerator and brake pedals, as well as the rotation of the tires, are tracked and fed into the virtual world to ensure a realistic and pleasant driving experience. The driver's movements in the vehicle are the third variable. Here we capture the natural body movements caused by G-forces during fast curves or heavy braking. The seamless and latency-free integration of these three systems is the prerequisite for a high-resolution and realistic digital environment. Special care is taken to transmit the movements in a way that does not cause motion sickness for the driver and ensures the most entertaining driving experience possible.
What happens during a BMW M Drift + BMW M Mixed Reality Experience?
A shuttle takes the participants of the BMW M Mixed Reality Experience from the main building of the BMW M Driving Academy to the training grounds. There are two groups for the Experience. Both groups will start in the morning with BMW M Drift Training from 8:45 am to 12:20 pm. Then, for the first group, the BMW M Mixed Reality Experience will take place from 12:30 pm to 1:20 pm, followed by a lunch break. The second group will have lunch from 12:30 pm to 1:20 pm, followed by the BMW M Mixed Reality Experience from 1:30 pm to 2:20 pm. During your Mixed Reality ride, our experienced instructor Philipp Götz will help you master the BMW M Mixed Reality Experience.
What is the difference between Mixed, Augmented and Virtual Reality?
Virtual Reality (VR) creates a completely computer-based environment in which the user is fully immersed. In VR, the physical and digital worlds are completely separated, and the user can move around in a virtual environment without being able to see the real environment.
Augmented reality (AR) integrates digital elements, such as 3D models, into the user's real environment. AR extends the user's physical world by overlaying digital information in real time.
Mixed Reality (MR) is a more advanced version of Augmented Reality. In mixed reality, digital objects are not only overlaid, but they also actively interact with the real environment and can be touched or moved by users. MR systems allow virtual objects to influence real objects and vice versa. This creates a stronger fusion of the physical and digital worlds.
In summary, virtual reality (VR) fully immerses the user in a virtual world, augmented reality (AR) inserts digital elements into the real world, and mixed reality (MR) enables active interaction between virtual and real objects.
With which vehicles is BMW M Mixed Reality compatible?
BMW M's in-house mixed reality technology is extremely adaptable because it works independently of the drive model - the existing in-vehicle systems are used. They are so precise that no further sensors are needed. This makes it possible to integrate both models with combustion engines and, in the future, fully electric BMW M models.
In this context, the BMW M2 was selected as the first test vehicle. For our customers, we have now created the opportunity to experience the BMW M Drift + BMW M Mixed Reality Experience in the sporty BMW M4.
How does BMW use mixed reality technology?
Originally launched only as a proof-of-concept to demonstrate feasibility, the BMW M Mixed Reality project we developed has evolved into a promising platform. After successfully merging relevant data to create an immersive mixed reality experience, we realised the wide range of potential applications. These range from the development of new vehicle models to production planning.
And now we are the first brand to bring the innovative BMW M Mixed Reality technology to life for our customers with the BMW M Drift + BMW M Mixed Reality Experience.

DAT NOTE
BMW M4 Competition Coupé: Fuel consumption in l/100km (combined): --- (NEDC) / 9.8 (WLTP); CO2 emissions in g/km (combined): --- (NEDC) / 224 – 237 (WLTP)
Official data on fuel consumption, CO2 emissions, power consumption and electric range figures were determined in accordance with the mandatory measurement procedure and comply with Regulation (EU) 715/2007 valid at the time of type approval. In case of a range, figures in the NEDC take into account differences in the selected wheel and tire size; figures in the WLTP take into account any optional equipment. WLTP values are used for assessing taxes and other vehicle-related charges that are (also) based on CO2 emissions, as well as for the purposes of vehicle-specific subsidies, if applicable. Where applicable, the NEDC values listed were calculated based on the new WLTP measurement procedure and then converted back to the NEDC measurement procedure for comparability reasons. For more information on the WLTP and NEDC measurement procedures, see www.bmw.de/wltp.
For further information about the official fuel consumption and the specific CO2 emission of new passenger cars can be taken out of the „handbook of fuel consumption, the CO2 emission and power consumption of new passenger cars“, which is available at all selling points and at
