BMW M2 RACING – Behind the Scenes – Episode 1.
On the way to the new entry-level car by BMW M Motorsport.

For many people, motorsport is much more than just a spectator sport – they dream of racing themselves. Since 2014, BMW M Motorsport has been helping a growing number of drivers and teams to realise this dream: M GmbH not only produces affordable and competitive entry-level cars such as the BMW M235i Racing, the BMW M240i Racing and the BMW M2 CS Racing, but also sponsors racing series such as the BMW M2 Cup. The new BMW M2 Racing now takes these strengths to the next level with more performance and new racing technologies.
DESTINATION NEXT LEVEL.
DESTINATION NEXT LEVEL.
In order to continue offering an affordable yet fully-fledged race car at the cutting edge of technology with the new BMW M2 Racing, BMW M has drawn on a proven production philosophy: the development of production and racing cars goes hand in hand. This guarantees maximum exchange of expertise and enables the M2 Racing to be developed at the interface between series production and motorsport. The result is a racing car that uses series components wherever possible in order to keep manufacturing costs down.
This includes the series chassis of the BMW M2 G87 base model, which must prove its performance during development: in a test phase with three different vehicles, including an endurance car that will have completed 30,000 kilometres on the race track by the end of the test cycle.
As a grand finale, we will complete the 24-hour race with the BMW M2 Racing on the Nürburgring Nordschleife.
EXTENSIVE ENDURANCE TESTING.
EXTENSIVE ENDURANCE TESTING.
An experienced team of BMW M Motorsport works drivers has supported the development work from the outset and made valuable contributions to optimising the new racing car in terms of performance, drivability, tyre wear and mileage, among other things. BMW M Motorsport works driver Jens Klingmann has been a test driver for this project from the very beginning and has been testing different variants of the M2 Racing ever since: an application vehicle at the factory in Munich, an application vehicle on the racetrack and an endurance vehicle.
MARKED FOR PERFORMANCE.
MARKED FOR PERFORMANCE.
Application vehicles serve motorsport and series engineers to modify the series components that are transferred from the BMW M2 to the BMW M2 Racing to an extent that they withstand the extreme challenges of the racetrack. A particularly efficient tool for the precise adjustment of individual features during testing is the so-called marker. It allows Klingmann to provide immediate feedback on functions and characteristics at the touch of a button during each test drive. This enables developers to precisely locate pain points and gain points in order to achieve the optimum solution in every detail.
The result is a powerful race car that combines ease of use with low operating costs. This efficiency makes the BMW M2 Racing particularly attractive for sports for all – and thus makes motorsport even more accessible to customers.
I am quite sure that the enthusiasm we all felt during development will ultimately be felt by customers when they take the vehicles to the racetracks around the world.
