A tribute edition especially made for the US is hitting the roads, celebrating a unique BMW legend: the 2026 M2 Turbo Design Edition is a reverential tribute to the legendary BMW 2002 turbo from 1973 to 1975.

When the 2002 turbo was unveiled at the 1973 IAA motor show in Germany, it was the first European production vehicle with a turbocharged engine. The 2-litre four-cylinder engine delivered 125 kW (170 hp) and accelerated the 2002 to 100 km/h in under 7 seconds, and to 160 km/h in 18 seconds – extremely impressive figures for the time.

The 2026 M2 Turbo Design Edition pays tribute to this legend. The homage model is visibly inspired by the design of the original. It is exclusively painted in brilliant Alpine White and features hand-painted BMW Motorsport stripes on the bonnet and boot lid. The power dome on the bonnet is black, with the reversed ‘turbo’ script reminiscent of the original. The 2002 had this as an option on the spoiler at the time, so that everyone could see who was overtaking them when looking in the rear-view mirror.

The lettering can also be found at the rear. Beneath the black carbon fibre rear spoiler, the ‘turbo’ script is emblazoned beneath the M2 badge.

The interior features are also reminiscent of the iconic BMW 2002 turbo. When you open the doors, you are greeted on both sides by door sill trims bearing the inscription ‘M2 turbo’. The standard M sports seats are upholstered in black Vernasca leather with M colour accents – a nod to the stripes on the bodywork of the tribute vehicle.

Purists will particularly appreciate the engineers choice of transmission for the 2026 M2 Turbo Design Edition. At the time, the 2002 Turbo was equipped with a standard 4-speed manual transmission or an optional 5-speed manual transmission. That's why the BMW M2 Turbo Design Edition hits the road with a 6-speed manual gearbox. Its 3.0-litre inline six-cylinder engine delivers 353 kW (480 hp) and completes the sprint from 0 to 100 km/h in 4.3 seconds. The top speed is electronically limited to 250 km/h. With the optional M Driver's Package, it is even 285 km/h.

Production of this strictly limited model will start in January 2026.
