The aim for each BMW M model: to capture the fascination of motorsport in a car suited for everyday driving.
BMW 3.0 CSL – THE PIONEER.
BMW 3.0 CSL – THE PIONEER.
Lightweight construction, motorsport and art: the first M car immediately became an icon. The BMW 3.0 CSL did not yet have an M badge on its tailgate, but it was the first car to be developed by the fledgling BMW Motorsport GmbH. From 1973, the sports coupé delivered 206 hp and was to remain the most powerful road version of the series. In Germany, the large rear spoiler was delivered separately – it wasn’t approved for road use. Maximum performance was achieved not only with its impressively optimised engine, but also through the intelligent lightweight construction. The striking aerodynamics package underlined this claim. Enthusiasts bestowed it the nickname ‘Batmobile’.
The 3.0 CSL was virtually unbeatable in motorsport: Until 1979, no one could beat the BMW 3.0 CSL in six European championships. And even in the arts, the first BMW M left a lasting impression. In 1975, sculptor Alexander Calder created an artistic monument with his BMW 3.0 CSL, laying the foundation for the BMW Art Car Collection.
BMW M1 – THE MID-ENGINE ICON.
BMW M1 – THE MID-ENGINE ICON.
Whether as an Art Car, a racing car in the Formula 1 support programme or the fastest German production car of its time: the BMW M1 caused a sensation in 1978. It was also the first model developed entirely in-house by BMW M GmbH. The combination of Italian styling and a BMW M engine makes the BMW M1 unique. Legendary car designer Giorgio Giugiaro himself created the timeless design, which also provided the basis for the BMW Art Car by pop art legend Andy Warhol, who said of the M1 in 1979: ‘I love the car. It’s better than the artwork.’
The sports car weighs just 1,300 kg, which, combined with the ideal weight distribution achieved by the mid-engine concept, resulted in outstanding handling characteristics. M GmbH produced only around 400 models for the road – all of them hand-built.
BMW M3 E30 – MASTERFUL THROUGH MOTORSPORT.
BMW M3 E30 – MASTERFUL THROUGH MOTORSPORT.
Pure driving pleasure: the first BMW M3 is one of the most impressive and dynamic models in automotive history and also the most successful touring car of all time. And as for public road use, it pioneered a new class of particularly sporty everday cars. With its lightweight, high-revving S14 inline four-cylinder engine, driving pleasure is guaranteed. By 1990, the power output of the compact engine had increased to 238 hp.
With the market launch of the M3 Convertible in 1988, M GmbH broke new ground: for the first time in its history, the experience of open-top driving was combined with the high performance of an M model.
BMW M5 E28 – THE HIGH-PERFORMANCE SEDAN.
BMW M5 E28 – THE HIGH-PERFORMANCE SEDAN.
The premiere of the first BMW M5 in 1987 laid the foundation for an automotive legend and demonstrated the passion BMW M has for sports cars. Much like the BMW M1, the first BMW M5 was also entirely handcrafted. There were no large spoilers, but the high-performance 5 Series pulled out all the stops when it came to the drivetrain: the inline six-cylinder engine had a displacement of 3.5 litres, resulting in a maximum output of 286 hp. Connoisseurs know that these are the figures for the M88 engine, which was originally developed for the BMW M1.
With sports seats, a three-spoke steering wheel and a 5-speed manual transmission, the BMW M5 was the epitome of sportiness. However, the combination of a four-door sedan and genuine sports car performance was a sensation at the time – and it still distinguishes the series today.
BMW Z3 M COUPÉ – ONE OF A KIND.
BMW Z3 M COUPÉ – ONE OF A KIND.
Strong identity, unmistakable design and iconic engine: when it was first unveiled, the closed Z3 M initially polarised opinion. Today, the coupé is a classic precisely because of its progressive and distinctive exterior. The design of the striking rear end also had an advantage: the upward-opening tailgate provided access to the spacious luggage compartment behind the sports seats – making it suitable for travel.
The long bonnet, compact rear end and wide wheel arches were atypical in 1997. The performance, on the other hand, was typical of M. If there was one thing the Z3 M Coupé stood for, it was driving pleasure. The 3.2-litre inline six-cylinder engine developed by the M engineers delivered 321 hp, exceeding 100 hp per litre of combustion chamber for the first time.
BMW X5 M and X6 M – X MEETS M.
BMW X5 M and X6 M – X MEETS M.
The premiere of the BMW X5 M and X6 M introduced many new features, such as the first all-wheel drive and the first turbo engine from M GmbH. In conjunction with the perfectly tuned chassis, both M models became the most dynamic in their class. And this was tested by the press – with impressive results: the BMW X6 M drove the Nordschleife in the same time as a BMW M3 E46.
The V8 engine with M TwinPower Turbo technology, cross-cylinder exhaust manifold and direct petrol injection played its part – delivering 555 hp. But the perfectly tuned BMW xDrive all-wheel drive system also contributed to the outstanding driving dynamics. The M specific chassis design and new steering system took vehicles in this segment to a whole new level.
BMW 1 SERIES M COUPÉ – M POWER IN THE COMPACT CLASS.
BMW 1 SERIES M COUPÉ – M POWER IN THE COMPACT CLASS.
There are just a few cars that are said to have classic potential shortly after their market launch. This is especially true when it comes to compact class models. However, this was the case with the 2011 BMW 1 Series M Coupé. In just one year of production and with only 6,331 units delivered, the sports car became the benchmark for maximum driving pleasure. The manual transmission and rear-wheel drive made the model a highlight for purists. Delivering 340 hp and 500 Nm of maximum torque from the 3.0-litre inline six-cylinder engine (N54B30), the model completes the sprint to 100 km/h in just 4.9 seconds – and to 200 km/h in another 12.4 seconds. A milestone in the compact class.
BMW i4 M50 – A NEW DRIVE.
BMW i4 M50 – A NEW DRIVE.
The BMW i4 M50 is the first fully electric car from BMW M GmbH and the pioneer of a new generation. The Gran Coupé brings the typical M combination of agility, dynamics and precision to the world of electric mobility. With its two BMW M eDrive motors, the performance model delivers 544 hp in Sport Boost mode. An impressive range of over 500 kilometres according to WLTP brings the M car from the future into the present. The i4 M50 accelerates to 100 km/h in just 3.9 seconds without interruption, accompanied by a drive sound composed by Hans Zimmer.
For the first time, the ultra-modern ambience of the model’s interior is realised by the BMW Curved Display, tilted towards the driver, and the slim instrument panel. High-tech materials and progressive design characterise the innovative interior. The BMW i4 M50 also marked the 50th anniversary of BMW M in 2022: a new chapter in the company’s successful history has been opened.

BMW 3.0 CSL – THE COMEBACK OF A LEGEND.
This high-performance vehicle, limited to 50 units, was the highlight of the brand’s 50th anniversary in 2022. The BMW 3.0 CSL brings the concept conceived in the 1970s – using racetrack technology for pure driving pleasure on the road – into the present day. Dynamic elegance in the exterior, a classic sports car cockpit, intelligent lightweight construction, an inline six-cylinder engine, manual transmission and rear-wheel drive are based on the traditional principles of a BMW M car and, with the help of modern technologies, complement each other to create the ultimate symbol of the fascination with high performance in the style of the brand, which has now been successful for over five decades.
BMW M3 TOURING – THE FIRST OF ITS KIND.
BMW M3 TOURING – THE FIRST OF ITS KIND.
Long awaited by fans, the BMW M3 Touring became a reality in 2022: boasting 375 kW (510 hp), later even 390 kW (530 hp), and standard M xDrive all-wheel drive, this model is one thing above all else: a genuine BMW M3. The additional space for family, friends and leisure activities makes the BMW M3 Touring a particularly exclusive sports car that shows its strengths in everyday life as well as on the racetrack. The BMW M3 CS Touring, introduced in 2024, takes this combination typical of BMW M to the extreme: with even more performance and a Nürburgring best time set by BMW M test driver Jörg Weidinger.

With the BMW XM, BMW M GmbH combined the unrivalled performance of M high-performance models with an electrified drivetrain for the first time in 2023. The M HYBRID drive makes the BMW XM the most powerful production model in the brand’s history with up to 550 kW (748 hp). Its expressive exterior, which is also characterised by reinterpreted design features from the legendary BMW M1 super sports car, stands for maximum exclusivity. Vintage leather combinations have found their way into the interior, and the inviting M Lounge in the rear of the SAV brings typical M, sporty luxury to the second row for the first time.

Racetrack performance in a vehicle suitable for everyday use: hardly any other model has shaped the BMW M brand as much as the BMW M5. The BMW M5 Sedan launched the seventh generation of the ultimate sports sedan in 2024 – and for the first time, it features the extremely powerful M HYBRID drive. With the BMW M5 Touring, which was unveiled soon afterwards, there is now once again a touring version of the popular M model.
