Following a difficult qualifying session, both BMW M Hybrid V8 cars started from the back half of the field. Kevin Magnussen made up places early in the #15 BMW M Hybrid V8 on a wet track. A ten-second time penalty following a collision initially set the trio back but Dries Vanthoor fought his way up to fifth place on the drying track. After a brief pit stop for refuelling in the closing stages, Raffaele Marciello brought the car home in seventh place.
For René Rast, Sheldon van der Linde and Robin Frijns, the race in the #20 Shell BMW M Hybrid V8 proved more difficult. Starting from 13th on the grid, the crew were forced to make an unscheduled pit stop within the first hour of the race due to insufficient tyre pressure. A 20-second time penalty was later added; they eventually finished no higher than 14th place.

Looking back at last season, we’ve made a big step forward, so we have to take some positives away from this, even though we’re disappointed today.

Ahead of the season finale at Monza, Magnussen and Marciello are in third place in the drivers’ standings. Rast and Frijns are tied on points in fourth place. BMW M Motorsport has retained second place in the manufacturers’ standings and holds a 24-point lead over third place. Toyota has already clinched both the drivers’ and manufacturers’ titles with a one-two finish in Barcelona.
It was very close and very tricky, especially when it came to managing tyre pressures and energy towards the end, but I’m absolutely delighted to have secured a podium!

In the LMGT3 category, Parker Thompson and Anthony McIntosh drove the #69 BMW M4 GT3 EVO from 15th on the grid to a podium finish. Dan Harper secured the third podium for Team WRT this season – following those at Imola and São Paulo – with a third-place finish. The sister car #32, driven by Augusto Farfus, Sean Gelael and Darren Leung, dropped back from sixth on the grid due to several penalties. Three weeks after their victory at Fuji, the trio finished twelfth in their class this time.
