BMW M2 Coupé F87 and BMW M2 Competition F87.

COMPACT HIGH PERFORMERS.

Inspired by classic models from the BMW compact high-performance lineage, the BMW M2 Coupé F87 signalled extraordinary potential when it debuted in 2016. Two years later, the BMW M2 Competition pushed the bar for high performance in the compact class once again.

5 February 2026

Just as the iconic sportscar BMW 2002 turbo reshaped the class of compact high-performance sports cars more than 40 years ago, the first BMW M2 became a game changer in its segment when it was launched in spring 2016. With this back-to-basics approach, the coupé emerged as the most successful BMW M model worldwide in its first year. Thanks to its newly developed 3.0-litre inline six-cylinder engine, lightweight aluminium M sports suspension and extroverted design, the BMW M2 Coupé F87 left no doubt about its high-performance potential. Together with the BMW M2 Competition F87, a high-performance automotive duo took shape that impressed fans and vehicle testers alike and won numerous industry and public awards.

HIGH PERFORMANCE IN ITS MOST COMPACT FORM.

HIGH PERFORMANCE IN ITS MOST COMPACT FORM.

The BMW M2 Coupé F87 was the new entry-level model to the world of BMW M high-performance vehicles in 2016 and impressed in every respect. Its 3.0-litre M TwinPower Turbo inline six-cylinder engine was newly developed for the compact sports car. To meet the high demands of sporty drivers who want to take their M2 onto the racetrack, the engine was fitted with selected components from the high-performance engine of its ‘bigger siblings’, the M3 and M4.

As a result, the engine produces 272 kW (370 hp) at 6,500 rpm. The high-revving six-cylinder engine allows a maximum rev speed of 7,000 rpm and delivers a torque of 465 Nm between 1,400 and 5,560 rpm. When needed, for example when overtaking, the overboost function even provides 500 Nm. With the optional 7-speed M Double Clutch Transmission, which has proven itself in motorsport, the BMW M2 Coupé F87 sprints from 0 to 100 km/h in just 4.3 seconds. When tested by the German car magazine ‘auto motor und sport’, the Coupé broke the 200 km/h mark from a standing start in 16.4 seconds. The top speed is electronically limited to 250 km/h. With the optional M Driver's Package, the compact sports car reaches 270 km/h.

When it was launched, the BMW M2 Coupé F87 particularly delighted M purists with its standard six-speed manual gearbox. Combined with the agile rear-wheel drive, driving pleasure is guaranteed, drifting included.

TECHNOLOGY FROM MOTORSPORT.

TECHNOLOGY FROM MOTORSPORT.

Technical solutions from motorsport are not limited to the drive system in the BMW M2 Coupé F87; a large number of motorsport components are also installed under the bodywork of the coupé. These include the lightweight aluminium front and rear axles, which, like many of the engine components, also originate from the M3 and M4. 19-inch aluminium wheels with mixed tyres, M Servotronic steering and powerful M Compound brakes are further elements with racing DNA in the BMW M2 Coupé F87.

The electronically controlled Active M Differential also makes a significant contribution to pushing the bar in terms of driving dynamics in the M2. This additional component with racing heritage, noticeably improves the traction and driving stability of the high-performance coupé. In conjunction with Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) and M Dynamic Mode (MDM), this results in maximum driving pleasure, especially on the racetrack, including the possibility of light, controlled drifts.

DESIGN – CONSISTENTLY M.

DESIGN – CONSISTENTLY M.

The BMW M2 Coupé F87 is an M high-performance model in its purest form, and the body design makes this claim clear right away. The low front apron with large air intakes and its muscular flanks with gill elements, for example, are inspired by the classic BMW 3.0 CSL racing car. The sculpturally shaped wheel arches on the front and rear axles give the vehicle an athletic appearance. The visible body extension is not just for looks but is necessary to accommodate the 19-inch forged light-alloy wheels, which are wider than the standard wheels.

From the side, the typical M family proportions are also apparent right away: the short front overhang, a long bonnet, a long wheelbase and the recessed greenhouse with the classic Hofmeister kink.

The rear design of the BMW M2 F87 also displays clear references to motorsport. The diffuser element integrated into the rear apron signals optimised aerodynamics, while the four tailpipes in high-gloss chrome emphasise the low visual centre of gravity.

WINNER OF EXPERT AND READER POLLS.

The BMW M2 Coupé F87 was not only the favourite among buyers – with more than 12,000 units sold in its first year – but also among readers and automotive media professionals. In the first two years after its market launch, the high-performance coupé secured numerous awards, including first prize in the readers' poll for the ‘sport auto Award’ in 2016 and 2017. In addition, the M2 was named ‘Coupé of the Year’ in 2016 by ‘Top Gear’, then the world's largest automotive TV show.

In mid-2018, M GmbH responded to the huge response to the BMW M2 Coupé F87 among fans and experts with a unique variant of the compact top-of-the-range sports car. The BMW M2 Coupé Edition Black Shadow features special design elements that further emphasise the powerful appearance of this high-performance sports car and add additional racing-inspired accents. The colour concept of the edition model in particular is sure to attract attention: the Sapphire Black metallic paintwork and harmonising elements such as forged 19-inch light alloy wheels in Y-spoke design in matt black, exterior mirror caps and rear diffuser in carbon fibre, and the four-pipe exhaust system with M typical twin tailpipes with black chrome trim, makes the BMW M2 Coupé Edition Black Shadow an undeniable scene stealer.

STEPPING UP A GEAR.

STEPPING UP A GEAR.

In autumn 2018, M GmbH raised the bar once again in terms of performance for compact high-performance sports cars with the debut of the BMW M2 Competition F87.

At the heart of the BMW M2 F87 is its then-new engine, which is based on the power unit in the BMW M3 and BMW M4. The twin-turbocharged inline six-cylinder engine with M TwinPower Turbo technology delivers 302 kW (410 hp) between 5,250 and 7,000 rpm. The revving prowess of the bi-turbo engine is combined with linear power delivery across a wide rev range. The 3.0-litre engine produces its maximum torque of 550 Nm between 2,350 and 5,200 rpm. With these performance figures, the M2 Competition reaches 100 km/h from a standing start in just 4.2 seconds. And the testers at ‘auto motor und sport’ cleared 200 km/h in just 15.4 seconds. The top speed is electronically limited to 250 km/h, but can be increased to 280 km/h with the optional M Driver's Package.

These key figures are complemented by a sophisticated oil supply and powerful cooling system, which originate from the BMW M4 with Competition Package and have been tried and tested in motor racing. Also borrowed from its ‘bigger siblings’ M3 and M4 are CFRP stabilisation elements for greater body rigidity and improved steering precision. The electromechanical power steering, Active M Differential and Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) have also been re-tuned. All these measures combine to create a complex and sophisticated technology package that guarantees BMW M2 Competition F87 drivers the ultimate driving experience, whether on the road or on the racetrack.

NO COMPETITION IN READERS' POLL.

Like the M2 Coupé before it, the BMW M2 Competition F87 won first prize in the ‘sport auto’ readers’ poll for two consecutive years. The compact high-performance sports car was named winner of its class in the ‘sport auto Award’ in 2019 and 2020. This means that the BMW M2 has won four first prizes in this prestigious reader poll in five years.

HATTRICK WITH BMW M2 CS F87.

The introduction of the BMW M2 CS marked a first. It was the first exclusive and limited special model in the premium compact class from M. With even sharper driving dynamics and improved performance values, it not only recommended itself as the basis for the BMW M2 CS Racing – the entry-level model launched in 2020 by BMW M Motorsport for popular motorsport and the club sport segment – it also marked a fitting conclusion to the F87 model series, which generated a level of approval and emotion in the community like few others.

ONE-OFF: THE BMW M2 CSL F87 PROTOTYPE.

After the game is before the game, which is why many people were already thinking about what might come next while production of the M2 Competition F87 was still ongoing. One answer to that question was the prototype BMW M2 CSL, a two-seater systematically relying on lightweight construction. Although the prototype remained an exciting experiment, parts of its uncompromising concept were brought to the road in the form of the BMW M2 CS F87.
