BMW M550i xDrive G30 and BMW M550d xDrive G30/G31.

THE M PERFORMANCE BUSINESS SEDAN.

In 2017, the world’s best-selling and therefore most successful business sedan arrived in showrooms in its seventh generation, including a sporty M Performance model: the BMW M550i xDrive G30 took the top spot in the new 5 Series range. A few months later, it was joined by the diesel-powered sedan M550d xDrive G30 and the boot space favourite, the BMW M550d xDrive Touring G31.

A powerful M Performance TwinPower Turbo engine, the rear-biased BMW xDrive intelligent all-wheel drive system and the M Performance specific chassis tuning made the BMW M550i xDrive G30 one of the sportiest sedans in its segment when it was launched, without compromising on business-class comfort. Those with a taste for torque-rich performance could – as an alternative to the most powerful business sedan in its competitive segment – choose between two models featuring what was then the most powerful six-cylinder diesel engine in the automotive sector: the BMW M550d xDrive G30 Sedan or the BMW M550d xDrive G31 Touring.

SETTING THE STANDARD IN THE SEGMENT.

SETTING THE STANDARD IN THE SEGMENT.

When new models are launched, the high-performance models from M GmbH usually follow the standard BMW models with a slight time lag. For the seventh generation of the world’s most successful business sedan, the sporty M Performance model was also unveiled at the launch of the new 5 Series in 2017: the BMW M550i xDrive G30.

Under the bonnet of the sedan, an N63 V8 engine with a 4.4-litre displacement and BMW TwinPower Turbo technology performs its duty. The engine produces 340 kW (462 hp) between 5,500 rpm to 6,000 rpm, with maximum torque of 650 Nm available between 1,800 rpm and 4,750 rpm. This enables the sedan to sprint from 0 to 100 km/h in just 4 seconds. The top speed of the BMW M550i xDrive G30 is electronically limited to 250 km/h.

Power is transmitted via the standard 8-speed Steptronic Sport transmission and the rear-biased BMW xDrive all-wheel-drive system. For a sporty driving style, the 8-speed Steptronic Sport transmission can also be operated via shift paddles on the steering wheel, while the specific M Performance modifications to the gear change programmes – with pronounced gear changes and more spontaneous downshifts across the entire rev range – further intensifies the typical M driving experience.

DRIVING DYNAMICS x COMFORT = BMW M550i xDRIVE.

DRIVING DYNAMICS x COMFORT = BMW M550i xDRIVE.

The BMW M550i xDrive G30 combines the comfort and premium refinement of a four-door sedan with the sporty agility and driving dynamics of an M Performance model. The drag coefficient of the G30 – Cd = 0.22 at its most efficient – set the benchmark in its class at the time, providing the ideal conditions for agility and efficiency.

The typical driving dynamics of an M Performance vehicle are achieved not only through the BMW xDrive all-wheel drive system but also through a range of additional measures. An adaptive M Sport suspension lowered by 10 millimetres and standard 19-inch M light-alloy wheels in Cerium Grey metallic matt ensure maximum driving stability. Behind the spokes of the front wheels, the M Sport brakes with Blue metallic brake callipers and M badging are also visible. The precise handling of the M550i is clearly communicated to the driver via the power steering, while every steering movement by the driver is executed with pinpoint accuracy, ensuring maximum driving pleasure during sporty cornering.

EXCLUSIVE M PERFORMANCE FEATURES.

EXCLUSIVE M PERFORMANCE FEATURES.

The M Aerodynamics Package, featuring an M rear spoiler on the boot lid, emphasises the sporty, dynamic lines of the M Performance sedan and optimises airflow around and over the vehicle.

The exterior mirror caps, the kidney grille frames, the M Performance specific trim on the front air intake and the two side air breathers are finished in the exclusive Cerium Grey metallic, which was characteristic of the M Performance models at the time.

The M Sport exhaust system with a quartet of tailpipes in an exclusive black chrome trim is not merely an eye-catcher on the BMW M550i xDrive G30, but also delivers a rich, emotive BMW M V8 sound.

The interior of the M550i delivers on the qualities expected of an M Performance model through numerous exclusive details. Inside the cabin, the driver is welcomed by M sports seats upholstered in black Dakota leather, accented by blue contrast stitching. There is also the latest-generation M sports leather steering wheel, M design floor mats, and special interior trims and pedals made of aluminium. The M specific interior adds a finely tuned touch of sportiness to the business lounge.

M PERFORMANCE ALSO AVAILABLE AS A DIESEL.

M PERFORMANCE ALSO AVAILABLE AS A DIESEL.

Just a few months after the petrol model, the BMW M550d xDrive G30 Sedan and the BMW M550d xDrive G31 Touring expanded the M Performance range of the 5 Series into the diesel segment. And the M550d also set a few new benchmarks in the realm of diesel engines.

The Sedan and Touring were equipped with what was then the world’s most powerful six-cylinder diesel engine in the automotive sector. A total of four turbochargers working on the principle of multi-stage turbocharging produce impressive power and abundant torque while maintaining high efficiency. The 3.0-litre engine delivers 294 kW (400 hp) at 4,400 rpm. The maximum torque is a substantial 760 Nm and is available between 2,000 rpm and 3,000 rpm. The Touring accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 4.6 seconds, while the Sedan reaches the mark in 4.4 seconds. The top speed is electronically limited to 250 km/h for both variants.

The 550d xDrive Touring is a prime example of the blend between everyday practicality and performance. Those who pack a lot of luggage for trips or wish to take their own golf or surfing equipment with them can make use of a maximum boot capacity of up to 1,700 litres in the Touring.

MODEL UPDATE WITH AN EVEN MORE DYNAMIC PROFILE.

MODEL UPDATE WITH AN EVEN MORE DYNAMIC PROFILE.

In 2020, the model update for the BMW M550i xDrive G30 featured a comprehensively revised exterior design and modified powertrain technology, giving the sporty sedan an even more dynamic character – and not just on the outside.

Complementing the aerodynamically optimised body elements of the M Sport package, the model update featured the BMW Individual High-gloss Shadow Line. The kidney grille, air breathers, exterior mirrors, tailpipe trims and model badging were finished in High-gloss Black, making the model update appear even more striking.

The facelift also saw noticeable improvements in terms of driving dynamics. The modified V8 engine impressed with twin turbochargers, the latest BMW TwinPower Turbo technology and high-precision injection with a maximum pressure of 350 bar. These modifications gave the BMW M550i xDrive G30 a significant boost in power to 390 kW (530 hp) between 5,500 rpm and 6,000 rpm. The further-optimised torque was increased to a hefty 750 Nm, available from just 1,800 rpm and spanning a wide rev range up to 4,600 rpm. This enables the executive sedan to break the 4-second barrier in the 0–100 km/h sprint, crossing the finish line in 3.8 seconds. The top speed is electronically limited to250 km/h.

THE PERFORMANCE ALTERNATIVE.

With the BMW M550i xDrive G30, customers had the opportunity to opt for a powerful M Performance model right from the launch of the seventh generation of the BMW 5 Series. Together with the exceptionally powerful diesel variants, the BMW M550d xDrive G30 Sedan and the BMW M550d xDrive G31 Touring, customers were offered a portfolio below the M5 F90 that was as diverse as it was attractive, excitingly combining everyday practicality with M Performance.
