Unique Models from BMW M – Part 3: One-offs.

UNIQUE BMW MODELS: ONE-OFFS.

Throughout its history, BMW M has produced a wide range of design studies, prototypes and single examples. In the third part of our series: fascinating one-offs.

8 April 2026

From a long-wheelbase version of the BMW 7 Series created in collaboration with fashion icon Karl Lagerfeld or a velvet-clad BMW XM inspired by supermodel Naomi Campbell to a BMW M850i finished with meteorite material: in the development workshops of BMW M and BMW Individual, fascinating unique models have been repeatedly created. Sometimes as feasibility studies to explore the potential of BMW Individual, sometimes as a tribute to a classic from BMW history. We present ten fascinating BMW one-offs.

The relation between BMW and legendary fashion designer Karl Lagerfeld was one of the influences behind the founding of BMW Individual. In the 1990s, Lagerfeld – alongside royal families and the opera singer José Carreras – was among the first customers to approach BMW with specific customisation inquiries for his 7 Series sedan. In 1992, Lagerfeld had his BMW 750iL E32 customised by the Individual workshop, and in 1994 his 750iL E38. By 2000, this culminated in a collaboration with the fashion icon, resulting in the unique special edition BMW L7 Karl Lagerfeld.

Based on Karl Lagerfeld’s designs, M Gmbh converted the flagship sedan 750iL E38 into an impressive long-wheelbase version. At 5.37 metres, the L7 exceeded the length of the standard E38 model by a full 39 centimetres and the regular long-wheelbase version by 25 centimetres. Furthermore, the BMW flagship model at the time stood out as an absolute eye-catcher thanks to its two-tone paintwork in Gold Orange and Chestnut Bronze Metallic. Despite its size and 2.2-tonne weight, the 5.4-litre V12 engine, with 240 kW (326 hp) and a maximum torque of 490 Nm, allowed acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h in just 7 seconds. For Karl Lagerfeld, the performance was probably just a pleasant side effect. Reportedly, he enjoyed the ride in his customised BMW 7 Series mainly as a passenger, leaving the steering wheel to his chauffeur.

BMW INDIVIDUAL 760Li STERLING inspired by ROBBE & BERKING.

A workshop specialising in one-off creations, traditional craftsmanship in perfection, and the fulfilment of the highest standards – guided by these criteria, M GmbH and BMW Individual presented the BMW 760Li Sterling inspired by ROBBE & BERKING, some 20 years after the founding of the Individual workshop.

ROBBE & BERKING, one of the most traditional silver manufacturers, enhanced the Individual 760Li with exquisite silver accents both inside and out. For example, features such as the BMW kidney grille, the side trim element hinting at the powerful V12 engine, the rear trim strip, the model designation and the tailpipe trim were all finished in the solid silver plating typical of ROBBE & BERKING. The BMW emblems on the bonnet and boot lid are even crafted from solid 925 sterling silver. The subtle ROBBE & BERKING lettering on the C-pillar, as well as ‘ROBBE & BERKING Sterling’ and ‘BMW Individual’ lettering on the silver-plated trim strip at the rear, are further indications of the collaboration.

When it was unveiled in 2013, this pinnacle of silversmithing made the BMW Individual 760Li inspired by ROBBE & BERKING the most valuable one-off model ever created in the workshops of BMW M and BMW Individual.

Just four years after the silver-plated 7 Series, another impressive special edition based on the luxury sedan followed in 2017 to mark the 25th anniversary of BMW Individual: the BMW M760Li inspired by Nautor’s Swan.

Nautor’s Swan is a Finnish yacht designer and manufacturer. Alongside BMW it had been a frequent sponsor of prestigious regattas. A collaboration to mark the Individual workshop’s anniversary was therefore a natural fit. Thus, the one-off model brought together the best of both worlds. Drawing inspiration from sophisticated sailing yachts, the one-off BMW M760Li inspired by Nautor’s Swan was created based on the flagship model BMW M760Li xDrive V12 Excellence.

Elegant teak panels bonded with carbon fibre adorn the boot floor of the BMW Individual M760Li inspired by Nautor’s Swan. The boot is also finished in smoke white Alcantara. The door sills and floor mats are likewise crafted from teak, ensuring the yachting flair of this one-off is all around. Additional subtle details include a sculptural Swan logo and the Nautor’s Swan arrow on the tailgate, which is usually found on the side of yachts. In keeping with this, a coachline has been applied to the side, underlining the vehicle’s luxury credentials.

BMW INDIVIDUAL M850i NIGHT SKY.

In 2019, the teams at M GmbH and BMW Individual workshop had lift-off – figuratively speaking. For the BMW Individual M850i NIGHT SKY, they brought the infinite vastness of space into the interior of the luxury sports car. Selected controls were finished with meteorite material. Furthermore, constellations glowed on the centre console, while a surface design inspired by extraterrestrial celestial bodies adorned trim panels, seat backs, brake discs and exterior components.

By incorporating space materials, the BMW Individual workshop created an aesthetic that is as innovative as it is unique, thereby once again pushing the boundaries of what is possible at M GmbH and BMW Individual.

BMW M2 by FUTURA 2000.

At the Frieze Los Angeles 2020 art fair, M GmbH unveiled three unique versions of the BMW M2 by FUTURA 2000. The three one-off models were hand-designed by the US artist FUTURA 2000, known for his unusual colours, concentric shapes and kinetic compositions.

The one-off models BMW M2 by FUTURA 2000 were extensively designed by the graffiti artist, both inside and out. On the bodywork, this is evident in the contrasting, meandering lines and the graffiti-style stencil spray technique featuring FUTURA 2000’s signature saw blade motif. Inside, lighter line patterns stand out against the dark background on, for example, the centre console or the trim strip above the glove compartment.

Based on these three one-off models, a limited edition of 150 units was later produced: the BMW M2 Edition designed by Futura 2000. Barely five years after their release, the vehicles are already sought-after collector’s items that are hard to find on the market.

BMW M4 by KITH.

In 2020, M GmbH unveiled its latest collaboration in an unusual setting: at a pop-up store of streetwear label Kith in Brooklyn, it presented the BMW M4 Design Study by Kith together with label owner Ronnie Fieg.

Ronnie Fieg is a huge fan and collector of various M models, and he displayed his own BMW M3 E30 alongside the one-off vehicle. Paying homage to this style- and brand-defining classic, the BMW M4 Design Study by Kith featured the original E30 colour from that era: the iconic Cinnebar Red. This shade is no longer available in the standard BMW range, but was selected exclusively for the BMW M4 Design Study by Kith to symbolise the connection between the two vehicles.

The collaboration between BMW M and Kith is visibly reflected in the interior. Beneath the headrests of the M carbon bucket seats is an illuminated black Kith logo with BMW M stripes, while Kith lettering is embossed into the black leather of the seats and the leather-trimmed centre console.

As part of its successful collaboration with Kith founder Ronnie Fieg, BMW M unveiled another spectacular one-off in 2022: the 1972 BMW 1602 Elektro by Ronnie Fieg.

It was no coincidence that the designer and M GmbH chose to transform a 50-year-old vehicle into a contemporary electric car: As early as the 1972 Olympic Games, two fully electric BMW 1602 models were used as support and camera vehicles in long-distance events.

Just as unusual as the powertrain was the paintwork of the modified 1972 BMW 1602 Elektro by Ronnie Fieg: Kith Vitality Green is a rich, dark green that was conceived especially for this exclusive collaboration. Apart from the 1602, this striking colour can only be found on seven other vehicles worldwide: the strictly limited edition BMW i4 M50 by Kith.

2025 BMW XM KITH CONCEPT.

Art Basel Miami Beach 2024 marked the next chapter in the successful partnership between Ronnie Fieg and BMW M. The spectacular result: the 2025 BMW XM Kith Concept.

This exclusive one-off gave the public a preview of a special edition that was released a little later the following year. The 2025 BMW XM by Kith differed only in a few details from the exciting concept car unveiled in Miami and was produced in a limited run of 47 units. This unusual production figure was chosen because the BMW XM was the first genuine BMW M car since the launch of the first BMW M, the 1978 BMW M1. In reference to the number of years that had passed since its debut, 47 vehicles of the special model were consequently produced.

Free from all the conventions of homologation for production vehicles, Ronnie Fieg designed an unconventional lighting display in which – to match the paintwork in BMW Individual Frozen Techno Violet metallic – the colour purple played a central role. Side accent strips made of backlit black mouldings, thanks to 363 full-colour LED units, allowed the ‘Kith’ lettering to shimmer in a purple glow. In addition, the decorative elements on the side panels also featured a backlit Kith logo.

At Christmas 2024, the world enjoyed a rare double premiere at Art Basel Miami Beach. Alongside the 2025 BMW XM Kith Concept, M GmbH and the founder of Kith unveiled another sensational show car: the 1981 BMW M1 E26 by Ronnie Fieg.

It is a comprehensively restored one-off example of the sports car, which has long since matured into a fascinating classic, featuring specific details from the Kith label’s design repertoire. The 1981 BMW M1 E26 by Ronnie Fieg shines in the exclusive BMW Individual Techno Violet paint finish; Fieg also adorned the legendary mid-engine sports car with a combined M and Kith emblem on the tailgate and while featuring embossed Kith letterings in the interior. The same design modifications were also featured on the 2025 BMW XM Kith Concept, with the joint appearance of the show cars bridging the gap between the first and the latest BMW M car.

Stars, red carpet and a BMW XM in ultramarine: as part of the 2024 Cannes International Film Festival, a one-of-a-kind creation from M GmbH celebrated its premiere on the Croisette: the BMW XM Mystique Allure.

Created in partnership with and presented by supermodel Naomi Campbell, BMW M unveiled its first-ever high-fashion show car. The body of the BMW XM Mystique Allure is clad in rich velvet and shimmering Frozen Metallic sequins, creating shades ranging from intense violet to deep ultramarine. The design of the BMW XM Mystique Allure blends high performance with haute couture, painting a picture of progressive luxury that continues into the vehicle’s interior. There, all surfaces – including the M Lounge in the rear – are upholstered in purple velvet. This unique combination places the BMW XM in a completely new context: expressive, avant-garde, and equally stylish and luxurious.
